Man, this thing sounds great and is shockingly intuitive to use. I love it.
However, are other folks having terrible MIDI problems? It seems like MIDI in cannot be sent correctly using the CONFIG menu - even if you turn tracks off it seems like MIDI Channel 1 goes to Track 1 and so on. Currently makes using it as a MIDI sequencer unusable unless you wanna use the built-in keyboard.
I wonder if @MichaalHell would know if these fixes are planned for the next firmware update/beta - it’s BRUTAL out here.
Op-xy is not recording audio, outside of what is in the single tape track. It’s all midi data, which is unlike what the op-1 is doing (audio).
Audio export of 8 tracks from xy doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Would be a great feature, but would be very surprised if that ever materialized.
Press the project button, go to config and go to midi. In here every track should be off.
This is a midi out setting where you see which midi channel the tracks outputs to.
Is there no way to set the MIDI IN Channel? So, the config menu is JUST to set what channel is being sent by each track? Just curious. The manual was very short on details here. It seems that each MIDI Channel plays each sequential track - Channel 1 plays Track 1 - but there is no way to change or reset or even just STOP that from happening. Do I have a setting messed up?
It might be incoming as an update, I have asked for this personally and they seemed positive to adding that feature. But I don’t know any eta for that.
Right now it’s midi in 1-16 represents each track.
You can however set active channel where all the input from that channel affects the currently active channel.
The ep-133 also dont have any midi in channel setting after its been out 1 year… its the reason i cant use it together with the other dawless setup things
Is it possible to sequence an external synth and simultaneously record the output into the OP-XY? Can this be done with the sampling engine? Tried to search the manual, but couldnt find an answer.
Just because the audio signal is triggered by midi data, doesn’t mean it cannot be printed to stems.
Some code design choices TE may have made, could make it harder to achieve, but thats about it.
Yes. One thing I have not figured out is how to record effects added from OP-XY to external synth. I can monitor with effects but when I go to sampling page it’s just dry signal. I’m sure there is a way but I have not gotten there yet.
Nice, good to hear! I assume that recording time is limited to 20 seconds?
Maybe resampling would also capture the added fx?
Gear 4 Music (UK) just dispatched so guess UK retailers now have received their stock
It says in the manual recordings will always be dry even though they are monitored through the effects.
sampling on op-xy is definitely intended solely to capture one-shots for instruments. i really would not turn to this device for phrase sampling except perhaps at bpm 160+, and that is only because of sample length limitations (which, in return, ensure this device can store a real boatload of samples)
for phrases, an op-1 or octatrack is definitely preferred. then, op-xy can sequence those devices. this case should be familiar to op-z users.
Yeah the 20 sec sample limit is a downer. No resampling with fx has to be a joke. A proper manual would be helpful. Gonna hold on to it until my return window ends and see how the next update goes. I love the sequencer + step components so much but the absence of such basics on the sampling side means it needs to be supplemented with other gear, which, for me, goes against the whole reason I spent the moola. I mean, if I’m gonna have to use other gear with it, I might as well hang on to the T-1 for sequencing.
Would you say that the XY can replace the T-1 or are there many things from T-1 you would miss if you got rid of it on favour of the XY?
I’m thinking about doing this but not sure if I’m ready to part with the T-1 🥲
I think I’m going to try pairing it with an SP-404 MK2 to act as a recorder that can apply different FX. The audio should be digitally recordable via USB C both ways hopefully. The OP-XY can sequence the SP in turn, automating CC values etc. as well.
Is it 20 sec total for the entire drum kit?
20 sec per key as far as i can tell
