Teenage Engineering OP-XY

How so?

Personally I see it as a proper groovebox that can be used for playing and performing music. I have been waiting years for someone to make a groovebox with equal functionality as old Roland and Yamaha stuff but with modern workflow and sound quality.

If you think of it as a workstation it obviously is more limited in terms of depth of the synths etc but I would much rather have this than a large keyboard workstation.

First off, thanks for all the vids. on the OP-XY, very inspiring. Question, if you don’t mind, feel free to ignore as well: what about velocity per step? Ricky was having trouble with that, maybe he didn’t know the machine well enough yet? Is precise velocity per step not a thing? Or envelope per step?

Thanks

Regarding velocity there are two ways to enter velocity.

  1. Using the keyboard
  2. Using the step component Velocity.

Step components Only have 9 levels of velocity
So that can be viewed as limiting. Personally that is something I haven’t found limiting.

But I do think there is room in the UI to add VEL, MOD, AT, PB to the bar menu for more precise editing of those functions.

It is something that has to be discussed though and something TE has the final say I as it is their product.

With that said, a lot of people seem to forget setting up velocity to respond to volume under the synth settings. If that setting is 0 then velocity doesn’t work on volume.

Have you tried using the pitchbend for entering velocity like on the OP-Z? While holding a step down?
I bet that’s a bit of a finger twister but it might work.

yup, it doesnt work.

Could be that its a feature that has been forgotten to be implemented. i am not certain though

2nd video from Tinez… Brain is very handy

I just wanted to share how my weekend with the OP-XY has been. I stayed up half the night on Friday, unable to stop using the OP-XY, and ended up going to bed way too late. Despite that, I woke up super early the next morning, far from rested, but the first thing on my mind was getting up to continue exploring the OP-XY. I can hardly remember the last time I felt this way about an instrument. Probably when I got the MC-303 back in 1996, my very first groovebox.

i feel yah.
My newest video started with me realizing that you can push the phaser into ungodly territories and being snapped out of my zone state at 3:30 am by my son who walked into the living room after waking up from a bad dream

That’s awesome! Someone in this thread mentioned XY sounded too generic, but I definitely don’t agree with that. One of the stock projects really showcases what this is capable of. True Autechre vibes, just like your latest video

I remember hearing a preset that sounded like one track on Amber (Nine)!
But newer, modern sounds would be welcome too tho

If you mean “Entropie” then thats made by me.
I first named it Autechered, but that naming would mean that it was the first project that would load and they thought it was a bit to wild for that.

One of the TE people mentioned that they used parts of that project in one of their promotional videos.

Edit: and the “Ask Why” project which is made @rephazer has so much depth in it, very BOC

Really impressive! I was wondering who made that one while still running the beta. Great work man

two of my favorite features from the OP-Z are gone:

  • the pocket size
  • no display

there was just something about the interface that I used my ears more.
Not sure if this is still the case with the OP-XY.

I should probably get one again before they are sold out everywhere.

it took sometime for me to get used to the screen. i was so accustomed to using the lights for guidance and that way of working was incredibly fast for me.

But i have gotten used to it now and i feel like I’m working at equal speed as i did with the OP-Z

Do you ever see yourself using the OP-Z again now you have the op-xy?
