Teenage Engineering OP-XY

Have you think also in Dirtywave M8?

For me the OP-Z style of sequencing is just one way of working, I don’t always prefer it over other methods (like say Elektron).

But once you get into step components, it’s a really unique way to add variety and evolution to your sequences. I love melodies, and using step comments like ramp up and down, I can create randomly evolving melodies, AND they stay in key with the rest of the pattern without me having to think about it. I think that key analysis option of the OP-Z (seems like the “Brain” functionality of the XY) often gets overlooked when discussing what makes the OP-Z so unique. If I start adding new notes to say the bassline or chord track, the step components adjust what pitches they use to take that into consideration.

The other big thing for me is the high recording resolution. You can set the 16 steps of the OP-Z to be MUCH longer via the step length function, so you effectively get I think 8 or 16 bars (I forget the max). If you just jam on the buttons in real time to lay down some synth parts, it more or less sounds almost completely unquantized. This also goes for knob tweaks/automation. So that 16 step sequencer lets me actually do 8 bar patterns as long as I don;t mind playing the notes manually, which is my preferred way anyway.

I can’t image having like 32 bars on the XY to do the same. Makes for much less “loopy” sounding patterns.

Yeah I had it for a while but the workflow got tiring and I like playing out my melodies with a keyboard and twisting knobs and I wasn’t interested in connecting controllers for that. Other than that it’s an amazing device.

I can’t tell from the manual – when you’re putting together a song in song mode, is each track locked to a single preset, or can preset changes be sequenced?

For example, can I have one part of the song where track 1 is a drum kit, and another part of the song where track 1 is a synth?

And one more question: any way to lock your playing to a scale, or highlight the notes of a scale?

I think the tracks can only be assigned only one synth engine as there are 8 tracks and 8 engines that would be logical. You cant change to another. But the engines can be modified obvioulsy per step so saved presets of the same engine is okay.

One big negative about the OP-XY is that there is no clever implementation for easily inputting triplets when making a 4/4 beat.

From where?

Should integrate really well, judging by how the OP-Z does that. I still have a 95% compete OP-Z template for the LCXL somewhere on my disk.

Man, I am right there with you. Played some of my stored OP-Z projects today after not using it for a couple years and had a ‘wait- I made that?’ reaction. Totally lost my muscle memory. But I know it’s possible, so that’s something!

Teenage Engineering Black OP

i hope they learned something and don’t waste that kind of time this time out
slicing is on the way but the fact that it wasn’t a priority is a minus imho… hope it gets better

In his XY video, Cuckoo mentioned that the lead developer (Jonas, I believe) had been working on it for ‘many years’

I’m wondering why the OP-XY isn’t on Guitar Center anymore, even though it’s been launched. Perhaps they got penalized for leaking it early??

Ordered from TE

I really hoped for that.

Lol I love your optimism. Personally, I’d estimate the reduction in price complaints in that case as 3-5%.

This thing has parameter slides man. It is really expensive, but it has parameter slides.

Thanks, hopefully mine is on the way shortly then.

My dilemma: 1 OP-XY or 4 used OP-1?

Yeah — I ordered mine from GC while it was up and they confirmed today (bc I was also confused) that the order is good and they’ll be shipping 11/25 — but I didn’t ask why (XY?) the new one isn’t back up yet.

If I were TE I would’ve totally slapped them with some kind of delay order for that flub on their part; give their competitors a few days (or week) head start on orders, but I bet it’ll be up soon either way.

I’ve seen people on Reddit complain about the Woovebox price, apparently it being compact means the price should be 100 bucks or something.

Plenty of complaints about the OP-Z price, the M8 price and so on.
