Teenage Engineering OB-4 (update)

Yeah, I think it sounds pretty great. The ambient feature is cool, the radio rewind forward thing is novel. I like it. Is it worth the cost? That’s a question every owner of a TE product has to look deep in their soul to answer, but for me the OB4 is certainly the most fun speaker I’ve ever owned and I’m more than happy with it and the sounds coming from it.

Thinking of buying one, Is there still no audio output? I saw this video as a workaround.

after initializing the TP-7 (which sockets are actually Input & Output) one could imagine that the OB-4 can do the same. :relaxed:

I just bought one. Sounds surprising good. It’s quite fun with Digitakt 2!

that is the real weak point

it really sounds amazing. i have some truly wonderful pair of Sonus Faber Concertino’s with a Marantz 2275 amp and the ob-4 still manages to impress me despite my high bar comparison. i take it everywhere and just sounds so damn good

what quality portable speakers are best described as comparable with the OB-4’s aesthetic?

How is it for producing music? I’m thinking before this and some small ADAMs for a little home setup (not serious mixing but still sound design heavy). What would the owners say?

For me it is absolutely not suitable as monitor replacement for producing music:

  • stereo width is really small
  • frequency response not really linear
  • audible subharmonic distortion artifacts

So, an Adam D3v would suit me better in this case? I kind of don’t doubt it but having a battery power nice looking ob-4 was tempting if I agreed to compromise the quality a bit

I use it as my main monitors now cause I’m traveling all the time. For me it’s great to get ideas down or just jamming but definitely not good for mixing down. My other options would be to wear headphones all the time but I’m already losing my hearing so I try not to wear them much.

I never heard these Adams, but from spec and features side they are superior in all kinds. Battery power is the only plus for OB-4.

What about those aiaiai monitors? UNIT-4 Wireless+ studio monitors | AIAIAI

They seem like a decent option for battery powered. Never used them myself though.

I guess important context is an untreated room. Provided that the room is completely untreated and small, is OB-4 that much worse for some casual music production than a more neutral (but still desktop-type) speaker? Or is an opposite, and it’s even more important to have a more neutral speaker in such a room. Provided that I have a great monitoring cans and the speaker is mostly just for convenience while producing

While I love my OB-4, I find it way too subby to be good for mixing. It’s great as a reference monitor just to see if anything sticks out, but so is the car stereo

I’d say it looks like a great option but, imho, it’s not at all.
It is way too noisy. Everytime I used it for creating sounds, it ended up producing rumble and artifacts after each sound.
It looks like a great option, but it is more of a streaming option than a home-studio monitor per say.
The issue I’m talking about is documented and TE knows about it.
It’s just the way it is (it appears to be a software issue of sorts).
It will still deliver - if you’re working at a high enough volume and don’t pay attention to the digital noise after a sound dies.
