Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II

Same. It’s as middle school as it gets.

I’m really stoked reading all the good stuff in this thread, and hearing people starting to click with the device so quickly.

I’m looking forward to getting mine, but damn it’s literally going to be in transit for 7 days, and thus far it’s updated to a new city every couple hours, so here I am envisioning my unit getting chucked from truck to truck. It’s direct from TE, wonder if they’ll have packed it well.

I’d probably return if I had a broken slider, though I feel confident enough in my soldering to fix… a broken speaker though?
Honestly that’s not an issue for me at all, I pretty much exclusively use headphones and rarely find any on-board device speaker worthy of using. That definitely goes for the OP-Z, but even extends through the stereo speakers of the M8 and the bass-ported improved speaker of the OP-1F. I just don’t like using them. If the speaker didn’t work I wouldn’t complain lol

I think there should be a way to latch a punch-in FX. Would be cool if you could do one at your desired depth, then while holding press SHIFT to hold it. I can see why they didn’t do this kind of. Because the punch-in FX takes over the rest of the UI. But when working with multiple devices this should still be an option.

I’d like to hear the original loops to see how much you changed them.

Honestly, the speaker isn’t good, far from the OP-1 Field one. It’s quite hard to hear the bass and kick over the rest of the sound, and turning up the volume just makes the whole sound more distorted.

i know im a bad sample for this because i like distortion but i think the speaker slaps. cranked all the way and then cranking the compressor sounds crunchy

I love how everything has to be either an MPC killer or 404 killer lol.

I dunno, I own and collect several samplers. Most have stayed, some have left (lofi 12), but I definitely don’t view them as competition more rather what strengths they have and the unique things they bring to the table.

It was funny seeing the new Kaoss pad and before we got video examples there were some people saying it could be the 404 killer. Turns out it was a completely different thing (that is continuing to look more and more overpriced). Now this comes out and people have called it the 404 killer when they are different things still.

I talked crap about the 404 MK2 a few posts up but that is coming from someone who owns and likes their 404 but still wonders why the MK2 feels like the software and hardware teams were only allowed to communicate using Morse code.

But maybe just my experience with many different samplers has allowed me to appreciate the nuances between them (it’s also probably why I want a sampler that’s just a sampler and not a full workstation like what the MPC line has morphed into).

Doesn’t make waiting any easier lol

Sick

tbh after a few days of use i gotta amend my sturdiness opinion, im significantly more confident in the sturdiness of my sp404 and mc101, ive thrown both in the same bag without any protection and didnt think twice. im hesitating to bring the 133 out of the house until i find a hard case

Anyone have success syncing start commands with a DAW? I feel like I am dumb but not having any luck with sync over USB-C in Ableton Live or Logic Pro

I think it says a lot about a product that every time something new comes along it is immediately compared to the former. I think that is when something is considered—The Standard.

Bron vs Jordan. Maschine vs MPC. Trump vs Satan. SP vs every sampler ever Etc Etc

I get it. What I don’t get is adults who turn into children bashing one product to elevate another or to justify their new found fan boyism. It’s both weird and juvenile.

SP is horrible at…. Aw I love how EP is so fun and SP is like Heiroglyphs. Etc. I wish SP was…. Etc etc. it’s weird. However, I understand the reason folks say any of that to qualify something else is because one is The Standard.

That aside, I’ve had KO2 for a day and half now. I originally cancelled my order before any of the fader, speaker, sticky button complaints based off of features and durability concerns. Turns out my wife ordered 2 for us str8 away for Christmas and they arrived last night. She loves me.lol

I haven’t shared any opinions about it (save the one sarcastic comment above in response to Roland bashing) because I think people having a ball and sharing what they create with it is more relevant and interesting than incessant moaning and whining about what it’s not.

Same here. I didn’t even notice it had a speaker at first, but like someone said earlier with the volca. I used the speaker in that when I first took it out the box for a laugh and then never again, would always sound shite anyway. Same way I don’t listen to music with my phone speaker…

I’m no TE fanboy, I’ve only got the PO33 but the reason I thought this be good to try out was I never really take to sampling, always find it not immediate enough, need more time etc, but always found the PO33 fun and immediate but it’s just too lofi and just too few features etc to use it often. Saw this and thought boom! That be ace, a full fat po33. Shame about a it’s robustness but hopefully it’s my window into properly embracing the sampling music making world.

Oh those that have it, what’s the mic like for recording into it? Vocals, guitars etc?

Running into some bugs this afternoon. Specifically with fader assignments. Looks the fader will default to FX if you run any punch-in FX while on the MAIN page. I had my fader assigned to LEVEL (NUM7) and then after doing the above it changed the assignment to FX (NUM6).

Pretty annoying and took the life out of a performance. You can also select the group and run the fader and that will always affect the volume, but doing this mutes other groups. Again, not reliable for a performance unless you specifically looking for that behavior.

Yep, Logic pro midi clock via usb and midi cable. Select it as midi clock device in midi preferences etc.

Thanks for confirmation. Weirdly still not working for me. I can get and send note data over MIDI, but no clock or transport

Also for those still wondering on punch-in FX with external input; it was already said this won’t affect incoming audio, but the same is true for incoming MIDI note data. If it’s not recorded to the EP-133 itself, most of the FX algorithms won’t work. This is because they operate on mangling the note data on the device itself I guess.

So this is really not a FX box for other instruments.

Ordered minutes after went live on TE website. just got it!

packaging was terrible. some tissue paper in an oversized box. the unit got slightly banged around as the internal carboard holding the unit ripped and smashed in multiple places. That said my unit seems 100% functional. the bottom of the sliders travel seems to register some bouncing but seemingly nbd. no issues sliding on the knobs. although the pot knobs feel comically small and twiddly. might need to 3d print something bigger. not sure why they didnt go encoder or magnet. As a whole the unit feels quite substantial. Feels like a quality product. now to figure out its special keys and play little melodys…

for reference my ko was shipped direct from TE in US.

PO33 with a new os in a seductive plastic housing for 3x+ the price… am I wrong?
I still want one and am kicking myself for not buying when I had the chance.
