Sorry you have to deal with this. I’ve seen this type of report way too many times. Kinda terrified of this happening after my return window expires.
But the SP404 MKII just wants to make life harder all the time. Some classic antics:
- Defaults the velocity on the step sequencer mode to 100 or something instead of 127 so that your trigger is always quieter when added to a pattern unless you remember to change it manually every single time you record.
- Requires a 2-handed button combo to stop your MFX window from disappearing (because Roland thinks it’s best if the screen gets back to showing us that sweet 3-digit BPM display rather than useful info)
- Gets rid of the MFX window when your played pattern loops round, even if you’ve used shift + MFX
- Turns off your MFX whenever you resample, so you have to remember which of your 6 MFX buttons were lit and turn it back on each time
- Changes pattern bank when you hit record in pattern mode
Don’t get me wrong, I do like the MKII, and it’s undeniable that it can do a lot more than the KO II, but it’s not nearly as well-designed as the KO2
i think the 404 intends for users to use it rhythmically. all of their combos and MFX quirks really arent that bad if you are playing them like an instrument. i think its actually a pretty unique way to encourage rhythm training but this is all my own fantasy idea as to why it is the way it is. but if you aint bouncing off every button on the 404 i dont think youre gonna click
lol. you are the 3rd person in this thread alone to report a complete memory wipe with very little relative time used.
the TE rep said we could send our device in to be inspected but i’m honestly a bit perplexed. i guess he is suggesting that this may be a hardware issue unique to certain devices?
three of us have experienced it within a week. but i’m to believe that nobody from TE experienced the system wipe during testing? It took like 4 hours for it to happen to me. haven’t they tested this for thousands of hours collectively? and they didn’t know that the system will randomly wipe without even double digit hours of use?
at this rate i’d assume anything you prepare or record is already gone. this is extremely prevalent at this point.
Fair enough, but I can’t see how any of the bugs/quirks I mentioned would aid playing the machine specifically like an instrument. I have less of a problem with button combos and more of a problem with button combos doing things you didn’t ask for.
for sure, the bugs get in the way from time to time. not referring to those as helpful
The 404 is better than the EP-133, but also, the EP-133 is better than the 404.
big if true!!!
Shill.
That’s just shilly.
shill be comin round the mountains.
Hell nah. Man say “shill be coming round the mountain.” lmfao. The voice and accent I read that in was equally absurd.
Faulty units aside, which I certainly empathize with, this thread and KO2 is a very good time.
Some of the TE loyalist comments in this thread reminds me of OP-1 threads back in the day. I remember jumping into an OP-1 thread one time to make a couple of feature requests like basic MIDI and velocity, and judging by the reaction of the loyalists, you’d think I was insulting their mother. To them, the OP-1 was perfect as is and needed no updates. Then, as soon as the OP1F was released, they were the first to shell out the $2k for the upgrades that they dismissed for more than a decade. It didn’t put me off from considering future TE products, but it did/does make me hesitant to participate in TE threads.
Tons of shots have been taken at the 404mkii in this thread. If you check out the mkii thread, let me know how many shots have been taken at the 133. I’m not saying the 404 community is perfect, but on the whole, and in comparison, there’s a lot more love and not much childish angst. They’re also not afraid to give level-headed criticism about the 404, where that often doesn’t seem to be the case with TE loyalists and their products. I mean, mkii does have some workflow issues that need ironed out, but when TE loyalists diss the mkii while the 133 has so many of its own bugs, workflow issues and hardware failures the cognitive dissonance is pretty stark.
Brand loyalty is as lame as it gets.
Im def one of the folks who didnt jive with the new 404, but happen to find the ep refreshingly fun. Glad to see other people have had a similar experience and have a place to relate.
Im gonna nerd out about why I think one piece clicks and one doesn’t, regardless of manufacturer.
ps i plugged the audio output of the ep into the sp. freaky shit
strange, I don’t see it like that at all. I always look at these threads as people just trying to take their minds off work.
I think you just fired shots at 133-people!
I’m talking about objectivity. That is all.
We’re internet arguing it’s a hot mess.
Objectively though, the best way to deflect a perceived problem is to not feed into it. Unless you have paid for that problem, in which case demand for better faders is fair play.
That’s all I provide on the 404 thread, super bummed out you didn’t notice!
