Teenage Engineering EP-133 K.O. II

I like my 404, and it’s got amazing capabilities, but sometimes I feel like I’m in a fight with it in a way that I haven’t been with other modern samplers. In contrast the 133 was so easy to learn how it works. If I had to choose only one as my sampler I might still go with the 404, but I can definitely acknowledge its ux is often a headache.

exactly. the 2000 (1997) did not have resample. the 2000xl (1999) added features like resample

Shame. Muting pads is pretty much my mainstay when jamming on a pattern.

@te-david I just wanted to say thanks to TE for making the ep-133. My friend’s 7 year-old son started customizing his 133 with legos, and now’s he learned how to operate it totally on his own. Here he is in action: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/HS27XtyWcFM

I know you hear nothing but complaints and feature requests, but you all have made something special here. I hope all the kinks get worked out so you can take a victory lap.

it’s fuckin cool that we have a drum sampler built to lego spec.

just wicked.

i feel you.
just because you have all the right ingredients does make the tastiest meal.

Yes. And even the XL resample is not exactly what we are calling resample here.

In the MPC 2000 XL (1999) resample was “sampling a sample again” with a modified frequency (bit rate or khz). It was both utilitarian (reducing memory consumption) and aesthetic (lofi or gritty, as it used to be known). In JJOS use is a “convert” operation.

I don’t know if the MPC 4000 have resample (i.e recording internally the audio output), but the 1000/2500 had this capability in 2005.

You have to spend time learning how to use the ingredients in the context of the recipe if you want it to be tasty. Otherwise, frozen dinners are quick and easy.

Legato is monophonic, and plays a sample one at a time. when changing the note while being held, it will continue playing from the same point as it was left off.

I guess there is no glide control.

Damn. Thanks for confirming though!

Totally agree with everything you wrote. And sometimes gear just does not compute. I’ve tried the sp404 countless times and I desperately want to have a good experience with it, and I just don’t understand it unless I’m using it constantly. Power and ease of use are definitely intertwined.

I do think they’re in different leagues in terms of ease of use, the ep-133 and sp404. I also think the sp404 is leagues more powerful. I have yet to enjoy using the sp404 (and again, that’s on me for sure!)

I just received an EP-133 from TE directly.
The external packaging was in fairly good conditions, inside the EP packaging with few sheets of papers.
The “collector edition box” is slightly damaged, so I suppose it’s not a collector box anymore. Anyway, the EP seems to works, the switch works since the EP turns on, the speaker seems to work, I moved the slider and it seems to works (the display digits change accordingly).
Tonight I want to make a QC but I’m not sure about all the things to check, does anybody have a list of could write a simple list on things to check on arrival? May be useful also for other users (also for TE probably )
Thank you!

How in Christ do I erase a project? Or even scene - ?! Holding Main and Erase seems to suggest my scene is deleted, flashing SCN/DEL, but nothing happens.

Keep holding it just a little longer.

Figured it out. “Erase” is misleading. You can delete a scene, but not erase it. And you can’t delete/erase scene 01. You can only delete its patterns unless I’m mistaken. (Edit - guess that’s why the cheat sheet calls it ‘remove scene’)

Also, erase+sound deletes the sample from the HDD. Learned that the hard way when I wanted to clear a pad from its assigned sample :frowning:

Mine finally turned up from TE direct. Same as above, came in a box with just some paper to protect it… feared the worst but box was perfect inside.

Fader working nicely, buttons all nice and feel great, speaker was doa but tightened the back screws just slightly and then it started working fine but honestly, don’t care, speaker is crappy as is suspected it might be.

Took some suitable safety precautions for my fader…… no way I’m taking this on the move, it’s feels proper delicate to me. Still no idea how to use it yet tho haha.

I received mine earlier today, couldn’t be more excited when all seemed to be working. Had a blast with @Jeanne’s Finland Rust sample pack. Turned it off, back on again after a while and everything was gone, no samples, no projects, zero data on the machine.

The KOII reminded me a lot of fkin around with electribes and kaossilators back in the day – I couldn’t care less about its shortcomings feature-wise when the thing is such an enormous fun to use. But gotta say – pretty disappointed.

I’m convinced some people buy then hate on SP due to some twisted contrarian gene. Ain’t no way you’re all fun and cozy with all the button combos on KO2 but somehow lost in the quantum physics of SP404mk2.

It is just as simple to accomplish all of the simple things KO2 can do on SP404 if you just ignore the Bigillion things SP404 can do that KO2 cannot.

Knock it off. Your bogus is showing.

Just say KO2 is sexier and makes you want to finger it more.🫵🏽😂

(*jk btw, no feelings were intended to be hurt in the delivery of this joke #humorgate)

Word. Sadly, 404 mk2 is too overloaded.
