This is why I feel like resampling would take this thing from “great” to “amazing”. There are so many interesting ways to mangle the beat, but they’re all momentary. I’d love to be able to route those back in for re-use.
i’ve got about 10 hours into ep-133 but haven’t messed with the loop mode. i’m struggling to see how it’s helpful or unique at face value. how are you using it or anyone else that can chime in?
loop mode is another performance feature.
After my first hour of messing with this - have concluded it is a lot of fun, has that TE sound I particularly like and is very very quick to find interesting ideas.
But due to certain shortcomings (in my short journey so far), mainly the simplicity of FX as master though still being prettty good FX, it’s most useful paired with another sampling/recording device to lift those ideas onto and then do more with. (BB, OP, OT, DT, SP etc)
This is still pretty great for my preferences, which is to let loose in an easy way at first without cumbersome process and too much thinking.
‘SAMPLER COMPOSER’ makes real sense as a sort of groove finder with plenty of scope for variations/uncommittted experimentation, but that you then use/resample in a more sophisticated way elsewhere.
So far, biggest like is how easy it is to (a) load up a lot of samples (64mb is plenty when you’re picking stuff you like as a palette and going for hits/notes rather than loops or pads) and then (b) use the -/+ to insta switch without any hassle interfering with your flow.
And love the design of the screen - basically as I understand it, simply some LEDs shining through a stainglass window… but it compares favourably to a huge OP-1 OLED
… a sneaky workflow member of the Field family after all - 4 groups to sequentially solo to 4 OP1F tracks …
Which additional sampler would you recommend to achieve resampling with the EP-133?
It doesn‘t have to be a sampler with a lot of functions. A small one, which could only sample 10-20 seconds would be enough, right? Does such a small (and ideally cheap?) sampler exists?
zoom recorder lol.
Blackbox would be my first thought - 16 stereo tracks and decent arrangement capabilities, plus an FXLoop to put things back through the KOII for more FX besides the Blackboxes own…
Anything else is bigger (eg OT obviously or SP mkII)
Good point. But as someone who is very interested in the 133 but have yet to pull the trigger, like many others out there, we are only interested in unbiased facts on the state of the product. GAS is already high, objectively brings levity.
Also, I don’t mean to perpetuate a perceived battle between the 133 and the 404, it could be any product from any manufacturer. It’s just the 404/133 thing is what I’ve been reading these past couple of weeks.
Seems weird in function. Cool looking, but if the volca sampler could just sample it would put this and most others out in ease of use and getting stuff sketched out.
Agree, volca is a great box. Never loved the sequencer or sample app though
Good point - or simply pick up a TP-7
the volca sample isn’t in the same universe as the ep-133
I fully appreciate what you’re saying, it’s not that I disagree with the sentiment of either post, but my personal experience is that sometimes we have to glean the information that’s relevant to us and sift through the less objective in order to get what we want out of it. It’s a valuable resource, but it’s not just a resource, it’s a living breathing thing when it’s phrased in terms of a public forum post on the internet.
At this point, I just advocate towards the side of tolerance and hope that people on the other side from my own opinions are tolerant of the things I post. I think direct commentary about other “groups” is asking for trouble, and while you should be able to voice opinions on a product without it being shot down simply because that product is made by a certain company, at the same time, typecasting a vocal few in the other camp to reflect the entire group doesn’t give credit to many others whose voices we haven’t heard.
Definitely nothing personal against you, and you can say whatever you want, but I see threads go off the rails all the time, I’m just speaking for whoever wants to see more product information rather than sifting that information from posts of people who reject the idea that their abject loyalty is polarizing for the uninitiated.
There is some basic litlle sampler called Snapbeat (formerly Openbeat), but it costs as a assembled version 200 $.
I would say a little DIY-sampler should not cost more than 50-70 $ and be then the resampling partner for the EP-133
I liked the design of this, I’m a sucker for mechanical button caps. If you want to lofi your sound this or a number of other samplers could fit the bill. I use an sp202 but not because it’s the best option, just because it’s what I wanted. I almost always end up using my zoom recorder at some point in the process, so I think it just comes down to if you want something that colors the sound or not.
I read somewhere about the Snapbeat sampler it is using some kind of voice recorder and hacked it so to speak.
Or maybe there is something cheap in the DJ-area?
Or there are also mini-loopers in the guitar-area?
there was a thread about snapbeat at one point actually.
Yes, I would prefer no coloring. Just the same sound in and out. Or from the EP-133 and back again on the EP-133 without coloring.
Anything lofi will color the sound. The only advantage of having it be a sampler as opposed to a recorder would be a recording gate, but I think you can get a digital recorder with a gate function. I’d probably look at that route, I’d have to see which ones do that but I’m positive there must be some.
I’m positive there must be other cheaper options, but I just found this Sony UX recorder that has line in and sound activated recording, I think this is along the lines of what you might want feature-wise, if you were looking for a handheld recorder to copy paste sound with.
Got my SP404 MK2 on Sunday, all due to the issues that TE has had with this launch. I missed the first run by 3 orders my retailer had 18 -20 on hand, I was 21st/22nd in place. Once the issues became more frequent I canceled my order for mid December. Really surprised at how powerful and inspiring the SP404 is but the button combos are really annoying. I am going to order an EP-133 once the issues are resolved and availability resumes. I think the TE and SP404 can compliment each other.
@KingMidas stop trolling (jk,
)
and + 1 for usb audio implementation on the EP-133, its an amazing feature on the SP404 , I can only imagine it taking the EP-133 to the next level
