Syntakt Science Lab

@Kingvikar and I talked about it a little starting here: Syntakt Science Lab #1: SY Swarm - CY Alloy - #20 by Kingvikar

Hope that helps!

For bassy frequencies, on the Trig page, you can adjust the note far lower (or higher) than possible with just tune.
Otherwise, if it’s about the kicks, it’s just pinging the filter and really the filter is doing all the work for the kicks. I still added pitch modulation in addition to just pinging the filter.

Note Trig is also how I got my so-so hats with Swarm, but pitched way the hell up. @ElectricBear got some great hats that entry.

Guys, please discuss such details in a dedicated thread. :slightly_smiling_face:
It will be easier to newcomers to find some useful info related to machine.

Great idea! I suggest we use this for the track 12 SSL.

New SSL is up! Get going with the SID macine folks :sunglasses:

NOTE: it’s ok (and encouraged) to continue contributing and discussing in the previous lab thread (CY Alloy - SY Swarm). For the foreseeable future, none of the existing or upcoming lab threads will ever have a closing date.

@avantronica Can you please pin this thread if it is possible? @Nils do you agree? Just for visibility.

Yes that would be great, if it’s ok with the mods and the guidelines. This thread is an important reference for all the upcoming Syntakt science labs, having it at the top would be very convenient.

Thank you! I can see the value in investigating and discussing people’s explorations and artistic expressions, but trying to valuate or rank them always struck me as a highly divisive and absurd endavour.

The Syntakt Science Labs have been a little dormant the last week or two, so with August approaching I think it’s time to launch another SSL. I will do my best to keep this SSL series alive, but it’s expected and totally fine that the activity in these kinds of threads will vary over time.

We’ve had a lot of entries so far in the two existing SSLs, and personally I feel that both have opened my eyes to sounds and techniques I didn’t know about. I’m thankful for every contribution, so here’s a big thank you to everyone who has participated so far

For the lurkers out there, don’t be shy! I just want to stress once more that this not a contest to post the best or most impressive sounds or tracks, it’s a science lab where any interesting findings or sounds you may stumble upon are worthy of sharing. This is for the common learning of everyone participating. The Syntakt is a beast, and there are tons of stuff left to discover.

The new lab is up here. Note that the existing two labs are still open, and will be so in the foreseeable future. It’s never too late to post!

@LyingDalai Is it possible we could pin this backbone thread?

@Nils can you please add the link to SSL #3 to the first post?

@igors48 Sorry I totally forgot, thanks for reminding me :+1:
I’ve added a link and some clarifications to the original post.

Just a lil pro tip I realized this morning - I strongly recommend adding OB2 and your computer to these soundlab sessions! Speeds up the sound design process a bunch, at least in my case. I don’t even need to use the mouse, just the fact I can see more parameters at once on the screen + the modulation visualizations already help a lot!

I also realized it might be a good idea to include discussion related to a particular machine within the SSL threads. Like, just RTFM’d what is said about the SY ALLOY machine, and it now makes perfect sense to me how it works. The machine has a built in hipass filter, which explains its propensity towards brighter sounds.

Would be interesting to know more about each machine as it relates to each SSL; this allows theoreticals to get more into play, which might yield further insights/inspiration for things to try…

I’d say we need more participation to begin with:) It’s been a bit of an echo chamber the last couple of rounds. I was on vacation and almost felt a bit like spamming with my posts.

It would be great having more participants in the SSLs, but I’m very grateful for every entry so far. It feels like we have a good thing going, so let’s hope things will pick up later in the autumn when most people are back from vacation etc. I have now idea what to expect in the long run (we have a few machines left lol). We’ll see I guess.

@jm2c That’s a great idea. It was fantastic getting more nitty gritty details from Elektron on the SY Chip machine. Not sure if we can expect that for the other machines, but it doesn’t hurt to ask

It’s Summer time, people are on vacations. That’s how I see it.

On my side, I have to send my ST to Elektron, it has a weird behavior.

i just got a Syntakt yesterday… i’ll participate at some point!

It’s been a case of bad timing for me—travel and a big work deadline looming. I’ve been watching with interest, fiddling with the Lab machines a tiny bit, and hoping to chime in with an entry or two later this month.

I just haven’t had the energy or motivation the last couple weeks. Work has been extra draining and planning a cross country move. These are kind of sucking the life out of me.
