T1 Kick
T2 Clap (thanks to @sdkboi )
T3 HH (better than the CY Alloy in my opinion…)
T4 Bass pads (in the FX tr)
T5 Plucked synth (in the FX tr)
T6 Chord pads
T8 Wha wha Guitar (deep in the FX tr)
This track is also a bit long, sorry, but it was so much fun to make this one!
As @Nils said, SY Chords has a very wide range of possibilities.
7Chords.syx (35.4 KB)
(first sysex dump for me, let me know if the file is OK, thanks)
thanks @sdkboi ! (very nice snare by the way… )
yes it’s a single jam recording of one pattern directly in live.
I’ve juste normilzed the MP3 when exporting.
i need to post the sysex file (i will as soon as i managed to do it…)
9 patterns and a long reverb out. This is the only processing… I had to cut the tail because INF reverb must be like the name suggests, growing quieter, but still audible.
If I do anything else after this it’s gonna be more experimental. I mostly wanted to get a workflow for using chords, because it feels odd choosing chord types via knob input, but I am using it drastically different than if I sat in front of a piano, so trying to just go with it is the goal.
This is simply a super track. Nice groove and lovely melodies and chords. You should release it
I feel the same way about using SY Chord. While it’s fairly easy to come up with something half nice, it’s awkward finding more developed chord combos via its interface. So I usually end up with something very simple with regards to chord progressions. But it feels like there are a thousand great songs locked inside it.
IIRC, when the cycles was released with the chord machine, Ess said that some music theory boffin had designed the way it works. Supposed to be brilliant if you knew how music theory worked…
Me? I’m still at the stage where anything music theory related is obtuse AF to me. So I never really understood the brilliance of the way the chord machine is laid out. Any pro tips for us non-theoretically aligned beatmakers?
I got another one almost ready to upload for yall, just want to check the balances without headphones first… its more the type of music I tend to use my Syntakt for for my own personal project…
Great submissions from everyone so far! Would be interesting to try to take some of these “lessons” back to the cycles, just to see how much could be done with it’s more limited parameter space…
Nice. Lots of interesting sound design here. A lot of these sound are far from “obvious” SY Chord sounds, which I think is cool and displays some kind of maturity with regards to getting to know the SY Chord. Feels like it takes a bit of time and effort to get away from the typical sounds that a certain machine produces.
For myself, I think I’m starting to see a pattern with the SSLs. The first phase is usually characterized by stuff that has come from just experimenting with the machine, a bit on the random side. Next, I start incorporating these finds and sounds into music that I think has more of my usual signature to it. At least that’s how it feels now
SY Chord is a pickle for me personally. On the one hand, its stupid easy to coax some Rob Hood influenced minimal FM chording from it, but that is also sort of the laziest way to use it…
What I love about these SSL’s is, they are showing me just how much more scope each machine has than I thought of at first glance… I mean, when you get a Syntakt, you start by using kick machines for kicks, hat machines for hats etc… and then wonder why it all sounds so samey? Yet, that it merely scratching the surface of these machines…
Hello!
I’ve been quietly listening to everyone’s submissions when I can and you are all awesome! I’m noticing a thread of how people are applying some techniques from previous SSLs already. Excellent! I need to catch up!
Personally I haven’t had nearly as much time as I’d like at present to work on music. Most of my free time is being spent with my kids during their summer break, so it’s worth it!
Here’s what I’m cooking so far. 8 tracks of unison’d SY Chord with slow LFO’s on the waveforms and a lot of around 50% probability to start. I add attack to the amp with TRK ALL and open everything’s filter and adjust envelope depth a bit. Some tracks have a negative depth for a bit of a quacky sound.
I improvised the melodies with my Launchkey in live record mode track by track initially. Only wanted to redo one once. I’m finally feeling more comfortable with keys!
I’m hoping to record another version I’m working on that includes some analog tracks for some soft percussion for a weekend video. We’ll see how things go!
Chord DnB
Inspired by some recent entries
3 patterns with some mutes and live tweaking of filter.
8 tracks of which 3 are doubled for the wub sound and tops that play along with it panned left and right with some slow sweeping of the waveform with ramp lfo (my fav trick with the chord machine)
Apologies again for missing the project file, I’m barely finding energy to religiously sit everyday for at least 30 mins after kid’s gone to bed and before wife starts looking for me:)
