Syntakt Science Lab #4: SY Chord

Some super cool sounds and beats in there peeps! Interesting how you manage to coax such different sounds from it.

@elxsound That’s a banger!! Care to elaborate on the settings of that main bass sound? Are you running av combo of Track overdrive and FX track drive? Really cool sounding texture. The part from 0:46 sounds superb. You could easily build this into a complete track.

also, I’m really enjoying these non-competitive competitions and all the contributions by everybody! awesome initiative

I’m glad you asked because I forgot to mention that to @zirkuskind

Drive is maxed on the SYN page and then maxed on FX track.

I’m going to upload the sounds for these (kick + x2 bass/synth sounds) later tonight vs tomorrow. They’re very basic, but there was a nice sweet spot in there.

H011 ELX CHRD BASS2.stsnd (567 Bytes)
H009 ELX CHRD KICK.stsnd (560 Bytes)
H010 ELX CHRD BASS1.stsnd (563 Bytes)

Just to recap, all 3 tracks were routed to FX and Drive was maxed on FX. Nothing else special so these should work well for anyone else, even as a starting point.

There’s plenty more sweet spots just sweeping through the wave types.

@sdkboi Thanks! I love these labs as well, inspiring and educational

@elxsound Cool, looking forward to the sounds!

I went for quantity over quality this time  This is all over the place, but quite firmly in the melodic/tonal camp. I think SY Chord really expands the Syntakt in terms of tonal and glassy timbres.

This is too much and too boring to describe in detail, so just ask if there’s anything that needs explaining.

A Rhodes-like riff with disco-vibes, joined by some housey beats and bass. There’s even a shitty synth solo (!). The chords in the second half were stolen from 808 State.

Back to the bunker. Somewhat reminiscent of LFO (very cool Warp artist). A rework of something I did earlier this year.

A slow, moody beat with some glassy textures on top

A rework of my first SY Chord experiment. Murky beats and textures.

Somewhat reminiscent of early Aphex Twin.

Not sure how to describe this 170 bpm thing.

Outer space travels with Waldorf Wave-like ambient textures, moving into Radiophonic workshop territory.

If you haven’t fallen asleep yet, there’s my first SY Chord track which I posted in That Syntakt Sound last year ( - and note my comment in that post :sunglasses: )

8 tracks of SY CHORD, the rather flaccid kick now overwhelmed by the bass that now dominates and was the last element to be added. Two pages of FX Block, with LFO locks on page 2 to vary the effect.

While I admire those able to wrangle effective percussion etc. from these unpromising machines, I’m rather more focused on trying something I wouldn’t do normally in a more conventional sense, perhaps because I would always take a different approach when selecting e.g. a kick.

(Edit: maybe I was irritated because my kick sounded so lame)

Really like the spaciness of 5 (Aphex Twin). Lots of delicate sounds. I’m still trying to remember to explore his works. I mostly familiar with Windowlicker, and now listening to Siriusmo, its as Windowlicker became its own genre.

And 6 (170 BPM) is super warm. Is that filtering on the FX track, or on the individual tracks?

Thanks for listening. Aphex Twin has a very large catalogue of releases, scattered on different platforms and under different monikers. You have a lot of (fun) homework left  I think Selected Ambient Works vol 2 is still my favourite, in all its simplicity.

Track 6: I used filtering on both individual tracks and the FX filter I think, but most prominently «choppy» FX filtering on the reverb and delay. That’s what causing the 8th note movement on the melodic parts.

Love that last one droning… “The Scary Door” vibes

Great work from everyone, a lot to learn! I feel guilty, because I don’t have computer around and I cannot post my project file. Maybe at the end I will dump my SSL project where I store all challenges’ patterns I’ve done.

Here I have 3 chord tracks, 2 doubled, rhythm guitar type of sound with pitch offset and roughly the same sound playing even higher on top. You can tell it’s live, because it’s mindless and out of time…

Sounds are in 5ths for this guitar vibe and also there is slow ramp lfo on waveform for each sound
There is also a birst of quick-fading high rate mod on tune, to get this more pronounced attack on the sounds

Sorry for the long recording, hope you find something you like in there sound-wise:)

Towards the end I mess with tempo and delay

This was almost like psychedelic krautrock of some kind :slightly_smiling_face: Sounds quite guitar-like, at least on my phone. One day Id like to collect all the acoustic sounds we’ve come up with on the ST. Guitar, piano, strings, choir…

Hats down, this is amazing and incredibly innovative. You should make an album only with this sound palette

Yep, I tend to come up with acoustic sounding patches quite often. A lot has to do with filter envelope shapes and how atonal a sound is underneath

A bit self-indulgent - however, I liked how this sketch grew.
Two tracks of Chord through the FX block, then a third just routed through Delay and Reverb.

Have left in the anti-ideal LFO contribution at the beginning.

Thanks so much for the kind words

Here’s another SSL4 contribution

8 x SY CHORD, a simple dnb pattern. my focus this time was on building a snare drum using three different channels / tracks (track 2: transient, track 3: body, track 4: tail/rattle).

And the corresponding project file which has this pattern on pattern 3 and my previous SSL4 pattern on project pattern 1. pattern 2 is another dnb thing that I did not render to audio.

thanks for listening!

@verdurin That’s a sweet and dreamy little melody.

@sdkboi I love that snare, very crisp and nicely balanced. Would never have guessed that it’s SY chord. Cool bass as well, I can hear it develop a little wobble in a longer track

Sounds really good. I keep trying for a single track, decent snare and all I get is a good enough/semi-passable snare.

Seriously lovely.

Thank you! Just like on DN II, I’d love to have track layers on all Elektrons
