Time for another Science Lab! It’s back to analog machines with SD Acoustic.
I fooled around with it for 10 minutes and frankly I think this one is pretty limited. It does consist of three sources so theoretically there should be some potential here. Anyway, I’m exited to hear if you can squeeze some surprises out of it.
If you feel that this lab gets boring because the machine is too limited, we might try grouping two or three of the analog machines for the next analog lab. There are a few analog kicks and analog snares with not that much separating them. Let me know what you think.
When confronted with a limited machine I generally FM it with an LFO as a first option, which always seems to amount to something 3x SD Acoustic. First track is the main beat with plenty of p-locking, 2nd track the vowel-ish intro sound and track 3 the hats. Track 2 and 3 are going through the FX track for ‘phaser’ like motion.
Some control all of filter and tune at the end.
Bit of EQ (mid scoop) and some Supercharger (parallel comp) on the master
1 pattern:
Track 9: everything except for the longer kick and the closed hi hat
Track 10: kick
Track 11: closed hh
All tracks through the fx-track with just a touch more drive than the initial setting.
Long’er) kick + closed hh and dropout of the short(er) kick are engaged with the fill button. I did apply some EQ and some limiting in ableton.
This seems to be the only occasions I use Syntakt these days, but I always enjoy it…but so much other(newer) stuff to play around with…
Thanks @Oxenholme It’s still quiet though, so here’s another one
Experimenting with making chords with endless reverb. Track consists 9 of a simple melodic pattern fed through the reverb at max decay. The dry signal is removed from the direct path, and the reverb is fed through the FX track for notch filtering. The difficult part when switching patterns was both to feed the reverb buffer properly at the start of the new pattern, and to empty the buffer from the previous pattern.
I realize I could have spent more time making a more interesting and rhythmic envelope pattern for the chords.
Drums on track 11, bass and hihat on track 10 coming in at 30 seconds.

SD Acoustic has some interesting character. I only did one part of pushing it into feedback with delay, but it doesn’t come out harsh. Although not showcased here, but I’m seeing lots of soft type sound with this one.
A quick sketch waiting for the bus, warming my hands on the FX Block.
Owing to reasons I’ve not been able to spend much time with the ST lately, eheu.
This is probably the first time I’ve ever used SD Acoustic…
Bit of a Ctrl-All freakout and mistaken pattern reload included in this performance.
Velocity Mod, lots of FX Block including randomised Filter page 1 again.
I found some time to do something a bit more ‘melodic’. With some carefully tuned FM you can make some nice drone-y bell gong sounds even though it’s a bit hard to control. 3x SD Acoustic + FX track Bit of EQ and comp in post.
You dialled in some great timbres! There really is a lot of potential and unexplored territory with audio rate FM in the Syntakt. Simple machines take on a new life.
