It feels like the foggy in between of kickstarter vaporware and an actual finished product.
Whoa. Didn’t know you could buy one yet
What pushed me over the edge, believe it or not, is this Tinymight 2 cannabis vaporizer I bought recently. It is made in Finland and I’m loving it.
When I realized that Supercritical Synthesizers was also based in Finland, I knew I had to have one.
I’m not Finnish but I been guilty of gear purchases under the influence of cannabis so I know where you are coming from.
The color scheme is even similar! Enjoy the herbs and the red(eye)shift!
This is as solid logic as any! I canceled my preorder a couple of months back but I hope this synth does well and sounds great.
When you’ve had a chance, would love to know your thoughts. I didn’t think they were shipping yet.
I knew before ordering that most the features haven’t been implemented yet, but I still really like my first impression.
The different character settings are very useful. I’m finding there’s a sweet spot with the gain settings to get just a bit of grit that I’m really liking a lot. Right now, there’s only one engine that allows mixing of two oscillators, but stacking and detuning them sounds glorious.
The main reason I bought this synth is for the analog supersaws and in its current basic form, it manages to deliver some really nice sounds of this type. The filter has a Roland quality that can be pushed more aggressively.
I really enjoy the UI. It is very clear and the knobs feel excellent to me. It has a great solid build. It reminds me of Waldorf in a lot of ways.
I’m really looking forward to all the additional feature though. I’m hoping for cross-mod options and can’t wait to be able to route sounds into 2 filters, etc. Also, some FX will be nice too; not sure what quality to expect from Supercritical when these get implemented.
I recently realized the blue, red, & grey colorway that was reminding me of something was actually reminding me of the Roland Alpha Juno and that makes me like it more. The Alpha Juno was one of my very first synths. The Redshift 6 kind of feels like a spiritual successor to it.
Now you just need a Long Drink to wash it all down.
That looks good. I’ll pick some up next time.
I’ve been interested in this for the promised multitimbrality but also the concept that each part can be 16 voice paraphonic which is really intriguing. I know the multitimbrality isn’t working yet but is that paraphonic element working with the current version? Not sure how that would work without also being multitimbral but just curious.
Does anyone have any insight on how that works? I’m assuming that a traditional DCO divided down a high frequency clock to create square waves at the proper frequencies and then those were waveshaped/filtered/slewed to become a sawtooth. So the idea here is that if you’re generating that square wave digitally you also might as well generate a bunch of square waves at different frequencies, sum them all together, make them drift and be detuned analog style, and then you can still shape that whole thing into other waveforms. Is that roughly how it works?
the $1,000 question that i too am still unsure of the answer even after all the booth interviews and preview videos. it sounds absolutely gorgeous so far
I know that it’s meant to work the same as their DCO module, the demon core oscillator. And IIRC it is a divide-down method of some kind that they use. I’m not entirely sure about the specifics but I believe there are some lengthy videos on YouTube about those modules which may give a better explanation.
Yeah I read through everything I could find about the DCO module when this was announced and watched all of the videos but still don’t understand. I just read some stuff about waveshaping squares on modwiggler and it sounds like what I described wouldn’t work.
Turning a square into a saw with a slew limiter requires adjusting the slew rate to the pitch of the oscillator in order for the ramp to be the correct length. So running a bunch of summed squares through a single waveshaper wouldn’t work.
Of course they have every right to keep their trade secrets, I’m just interested and curious. And not understanding how this could actually be a DCO and not just a digital oscillator.
Sounds very eighties
