Superbooth 2024 (May 16 - 18)

Anything from Arturia? Like a new firmware for the Minifreak with Samples? That leaked some time ago with the new Noir model…

I thought we would have a new MkIII 88 Keylab

Some SonicState vids.

I talked to Jean Michel - he and the rest of the team are extremely down to earth. To not risk misquoting anything I will keep it short in saying that they launched Digitakt II with a lot of future expansion in mind. This is evidenced in things like the new page design and additional buttons. He also said that when it comes to updates for existing machines, of course they try their best to provide what is possible on the hardware, but sometimes there are challenges when it comes to where something can be placed in a menu or key shortcut.

This is why Digitakt II has a dedicated button for song mode and the keyboard. E.g think of how song mode changed the behavior of the previous button it took over. So quoting again, things like 128 steps or perform kits on DN & ST might seem easy to theorize on a forum post, but they can very easily be misconstrued as something that is guaranteed to happen when it’s not always the case.

In my opinion, if anyone in here would actually be able to have them elektron guys actually talk about the future of the models line I would call it a victory. As I said on discord, if they do not want to do future updates (which is fine) they should make the firmware open source, as its only found on the models and they’re moving on a new platform anyways.

That’s cool to hear man, thanks for that, hopefully it’s part of their expansion plans :metal:

Has Polyend announced what the next firmware update for the Play/+ will include yet?

I’ve said similar things in other posts to what I’m about to say: this is extremely unlikely to happen.

Even if the code base were copy pasted+modified to some degree and geared towards the feature set of the models there is still likely to be a lot of utility/library code in there that they would still like to keep proprietary and that would render the point of open sourcing the rest moot

Absolutely. I think this will open up a whole new way of creating instruments.

Can’t say I’m that excited by anything today.

I understand and mostly agree with your points. Thing is, the trend right now is at giving people tools if they wanna improve or change an instrument, its especially in my opinion relevant for lower priced instruments. Its a good way to ensure the longevity of a machine w/o actually having to invest money/time into it.

I feel like right now that would be a big mistake to let the models die like that (especially if they do not have any upgraded versions of them in the work). You can see every big synth companies and even smaller boutique ones returning to lower priced products and more open-ended machines with Korg SDK for example (or see the new Wee noise maker pgb-1)…

This is a huge part of the market Elektron is missing right now, most people will not spend 1K+ on a groovebox no matter how deep it is. A lot of instruments got a newly found popularity with the release of alt firmwares (thinking of volca sample mk1 for example)…

The one that has my attention for creating exciting “electronic” sorts of instruments from acoustic ones is Ferrous from Landscape that MichaalHell posted upthread.

Landscape listed six or eight instruments they had experimented with but i immediately thought of a dozen more for experiments – always a good sign something will get used.

Plus the Ferrous is so darn inexpensive, at least as an entry point, you then start buying other stuff to experiment with as a result.

This is exciting and unusual.

New – the Silhouette Sport

The Silhouette is perennially and almost exclusively a Superbooth thing. Every year they doggedly bring new features and improvements. Completing the loop audio to visual and back last year was a big improvement. Now it works realtime !!

Having a smaller version, now is the next step. I was waiting for the Silhouette announcement this year. The camera is fun.

I love this experimental side to SB.

Attention @Tajnost – I know you’ve been interested in this sort of thing in the past.
