Subtrack Round Robin

I think @Jeanne has mentioned elsewhere, but here’s its own topic!

Subtracks can do Round Robin (cycling) on samples, per subtrack. There are a some of examples of this in the factory library (check out ‘Too Hard To Handle’, where each drum sound actually cycles through 6x samples) - so thought I’d attempt to make one (attached below)

It’s quite simple really. It just requires editing an existing .eldrum preset file (I used the ‘TooHardToHandle.eldrum’ file and tweaked it to match my own samples. Make sure that samples and preset file are all in the same folder, and that all names match up, and it should work.

Note the Strategy = “Forward” bit! I think that might take other “strategies” too (Reverse, Random…?) so i’ll try that next. Anyway here’s my first test preset in action… Amen break, split into individual hits so all kicks are on sub1, all snares on sub2 and all hats on sub3…

AMEN-RR.zip (451.9 KB)
Place the folder in User>Drum Sets and it will be loadable from Fn+SRC > Subtracks (appears at bottom of list)

Way too awesome! :fire: :fire: :fire:

I’m working on a sfz to eldrum converter, it does support Round Robin, but doesn’t support Velocity Layers yet, but will soon:

If you want to check the opcode structure for Velocity Layers, check my “Quartzifer” preset from the Tonverk

I already wanted the Tonverk badly but now I need it. This was just what I wanted to hear! Thank you!

And no I don’t think I ever get tired of amen breaks or any other breaks for that matter

It’s kind of amazing that this feature, which makes subtracks much more attractive, is left as a kind of Easter egg to be discovered by examining the structure of preset files…!

A long while ago I was made a post about the search for a sampler who supports Round Robin. People laughed. Now I have the last laugh.

I’m loving all the exciting developments sfz support and open text files are giving this new Elektron instrument. I feel like as the community grows bigger, it will go craaaazy

Do you manipulate the file/setup the round robin on your computer or can you do it on the device stand alone?

This is soooo awesome. I have been looking for round robin functionality on the Digitakt for years also, and ordered the Tonverk in the hope that eventually we would get a functionality close to it.
I can now forgive the lack of SLICE or GRID machine (ducks)

It’s not possible on the TV directly. I don’t know if there are plans to add this to the TV, but it would be kewwllll

Ah, ok. Yeah would be great if you didn’t need the computer for this!

The only thing I’ve used GRID on the DTII for was to have a poor woman’s round robin

I wonder, if you had not said anything, how long it would have taken others to discover this.

I actually didn’t (I wanted to mention it in my Video, but forgot it), but someone asked in the “Introducing Tonverk” thread, and I didn’t want to not answer :drunk:

I was the one who went off-piste in testing to experiment with this … when asked, Elektron were not forthcoming on mode options within the fairly clear syntax, I think I had to work out one of the options empirically by substituting likely candidate entries

All that is to say there may be further playback options not utilised within the presets

Afaicr it is quite flexible and obviously lends itself to the community development of bespoke tools

Small update:
Alongside [Strategy = “Forward”] (used in the above AMEN-RR kit), [Strategy = “Random”] also works!

Interestingly (or not), [Strategy = “Reverse”] or [Strategy = “Backwards”] don’t work. Maybe it’s just Forward and Random that are supported, no idea really - just guessing!

“Random-Other” would be a cool option, stops the same sample from being triggered more than once consecutively, avoiding machine-gunning.

This is fantastic stuff! Thanks to all those that helped bring this knowledge… my list of “cool things to play about with on the TV” continues to grow and this one is bobbing up to the top of the pile! Zauber!!

Incredible. Downloaded so I can load it when my Tv comes.

I had thought about using the multi sampler to achieve this sort of thing but subtracks seems like it would be even better. Can you assign samples with both random/order as well as velocity? Would be great to create 8x8 matrix tables for each subtrack
