Stimming’s Instant Mastering Chain

I just got my IMC in the mail today. I haven’t had the chance to plug it in yet, but I can confirm @stimming’s prior statement that this box is tiny, even smaller than I had expected.

La Croix for scale.

Holy shit

That is very tiny. Cool
If ever there comes a time where I perform enough that this will make sense, I’m definitely going to consider it

Man this looks boss as hell.

Although, I more wish elektron would just do a proper makeover when they wish to make a mk3 of such a legendary device.

The mk2 is straight up lazy. Better converters, better cpu/ram and better effects. Cmon.

Still, this thing is tempting, but for the price i would rather buy a machine that sounds good straight out of the box.

Ableton live and midi controller, sigh. I guess we ride into the sunset.

Here’s a pretty thorough walkthrough of the features

I’ve been preparing for a show these last few weeks, thus I’ve finally had a proper opportunity to run my rig through the box and I’ve begun to get a decent handle on the impact it’s having on my sound.

It’s hard to really quantify or qualify what that impact is, but I can confidently say that this box both does exactly what I was hoping it would do while also doing much more than I had anticipated.

I feel like it should be mentioned that I don’t do a lot of beat-driven music, if only because most of the demos available are focusing on beat-driven music.

What this box is doing with my sound is it’s giving it more throb, more pronounced movement, and it’s also “glueing” everything together while somehow also sounding like it’s making more space for the individual elements to stand out.

This was a very expensive risk, and and I very unique risk for me (this is pretty much my first piece of “outboard” gear) and I’m glad I did it as I fucking love it.

I’ll be playing a set through a proper system tonight, and I can’t wait to hear/feel what that will sound like.

Please report back.
Did you ever tried other gear for that purpose ?

I have the AH and OTO Boum…getting pretty good results with these.

No, I have not tried other gear for that purpose. And forgive me, but what’s the AH?

Unfortunately last night we were having issues getting both my stereo channels to come through on the house system, but fortunately it definitely did not seem to be an issue with the IMC, or even with anything in my rig, but seems to be a problem with the house rig.

Everything worked out when I just ran direction from my mixer to the house rig so we did that. I recorded my set though, and the recording was through the IMC, so I’ll at least be able to revisit the results that way.

I’m also playing another show tonight, so we’ll see how things work out there. I don’t anticipate that this system will be quite as “robust” as last night’s though.

Now at Sonic State / Superbooth:

Its a clearly useful device - but as @darenager mentioned - it has no loudness meter - this was also done with a VST in the box in the sonicstate video. I think its a clear omission, to leave the metering (LED´s ) out. I did design /build electronic measurement devices myself - and i know that fine tuning is a very time consuming task - it is very good that @stimming with his experience made it usable for that purpose. I thought during the presentation, that the actual builder should have the opportunity to talk about the device (and rave about the circuits).

For this price you could get an SSL SiX and a analog heat and call it a day.

Or just a RNC & Analog Heat too.

I like the size though.

I can imagine Stimmings response
“We have ears for that”.

In a loud club … sure. You hear the club, monitoring and your headphones. I believe it would be a cool feature.

for this price you can even get an Overstayer Modular Channel
or a Silver Bullet mk1 plus Elysia Xpressor
any combo of those and other larger units is infinitely better for any use case, which is why there’s no such small units on the market (and for that, Six+AH or RNC+AH is better too)

I think the primary use case here is for a performer who want to fit this plus a groove box or sampler in hand luggage when traveling by plane.

Have you looked into the modular sampler- the Assimil8or. With a CV-Midi converter, you could build exactly the kind of sampler you might want, with very up to date effects. I don’t think your music is shit. You have a very public persona, which may lead to unwanted criticism- especially on the interwebs.
Oh, and I use the Analog Heat with my OT to make it sound more mastered. Works really well. Good luck, not that u need any.

thus saving on a Peli case to invest in a ‘mastering’ chain? )
well maybe mk2 will be battery powered for a just a grand or two more
anyways, two Elysias in ‘cube’ formfactor are still viable for those one-box musicians too

not saying there’s no use cases or market for this device at all, ofc

Ello,

Got a lone unit from Stimming to test it out. SO I made a review and tutorial of it. I thoroughly A/B test it (with an LUFS meter) to show you what it can do and how it sounds.

Enjoy

Nice run down!

As I experienced by extensively testing an RNLA this shows that main bus compression is a subtle affair and anyone thinking they’ll run their muddy mixes into it and magically get a super fat output will be disappointed.

I just wish you had used a track with more transient percussion in the highs: hi-hats/snares/claps. Your track is the same kind of smooth and bassy minimal-ish that Stimming uses to demo it. Would have liked to hear something else on it. Something more techno-ish.

Technical question: that LUFS reading is the overall loudness, right? Shouldn’t we be looking at peak values too when comparing dry and processed? The idea being that the peaks are where the dynamics processing of the PA will kick in and we want to get as much loudness as we can under that limit.
