Probably cheaper than buying the new caps from Elektron ![]()
glad you were able to, proof of concept an ultrasonic (like those opticians use) cleaner does it.
That is not true. I cleaned some buttons of my DT and they look and work really fine. Will do with the others if they become too sticky.
Forgot the procedure though. It included household chemicals and micro fibre cloth.
I, too, think a non stick replacement even 3rd party would be a product - but these special shine through buttons are not easy to reproduce. So rather a cleaning service would be an option for a dedicated startup - like in „send in your buttons“. ![]()
I am curious to know what product you have used.
I managed to clean them with warm water ( cloth) and a soft cloth and it worked. Rubber went away and the buttons are now shiny and no longer sticky.
Will tell you next time I need to clean some, it included something soapy in the first round, and then sth I had read - but I totally forgot what it was and didn’t take notes. The micro fiber cloth did a lot of the relevant work, though.
Offering the non-TPE buttons is a step in the right direction, and I’ve been holding off on a Digitakt 2 purchase until something changed (so you’d think I’d be happy
) BUT the thought of having to spend $75 on top of the $1100 for the digitakt is making me want to continue holding out. I don’t foresee them offering a TPE and non-TPE version of all of their products but I hope one day they will offer 1 free set with a registered serial number on their site.
IMHO they should just switch over and scrap the gummy ones, I think the consensus is everyone hates them (or at least they will do once they go gum)
Just bought mine for Octa and Rytm.
Saw this message on the check out screen:

Anyone in the USA had any hassle with this?
I’m curious to see how they will age.
My keyboard nerd perspective is that it’s likely the smooth caps are made of ABS plastic, which will turn glossy and slippery with age and handling (like that spot on a cheap keyboard’s spacebar).
PBT would have avoided this issue but would cost more and can’t be made transluscent (which the LEDs need). It could also be a fancy PBT + ABS construction, but I highly doubt it.
At any rate, if it does turn glossy, I will still personally prefer it over the yucky TPE goo.
Really like the rubberized ones, it fits the device, feels more classy IMHO…I’m just not thrilled about the decay into stickyness. As long as possible I’ll buy replacement ones, but as a last resort I’ll buy a spare smooth set for when the time comes Elektron won’t make any more rubberized ones.
Not been checking in here for a while so pretty pleased to see the new buttons are available. I got a new set of OG [soft] ones sent to me 2 years ago and was so cheesed off I never bothered fitting them. And ultimately mothballed the Digitakt. Just went back to using the MD & MNM - so not a bad thing tbh. But kind of surprised it has taken this long given it was clearly an issue for so many people.
Always had a lot of respect for how Elektron generally deals with things, but charging €50 to fix something they’ve known to be a problem for years (and continued producing) seems totally off to me
well 14 years is a bit a longer ageing than 2 years…people have had issues with just 2 years of using the buttons…

Funny. This reminds me of Miss Belvedere.

I agree, feels rude to have a profit margin on a replacement for an arguably faulty product (though obviously I don’t know how much these cost Elektron…).
Surely the loss of good will isn’t worth the extra few dollars they make.
I really wish they’d hurry up on releasing the caps that aren’t just a sticky mess. All my elektron machines have gone gross now - clean hands, relatively normal climate in scotland, never left my studio, not in direct sunlight etc. and it makes me not want to bother using them anymore because gross.
