Sticking with the OG Digitone

Just so you’re aware, the machines aren’t like on other Elektron devices. They’re as complex as your average single-panel plugin and give you fine control over things and additional envelopes. Not really instant gratification.

This is good. More fine control is good. Are some people unwilling to do basic sound design?

Thank goodness - this is exactly what ended up frustrating me most about the Syntakt. There’s only so far you can take it when you’re so limited in parameter options. Toy, for example, always sounds like Toy to me no matter how far I try to mangle it.

As somebody who obsessively designs sounds and yet swears by the superiority of the model cycles, the tradeoff can be a breath of fresh air.

lol, yeah my studio is an amalgamation of all kinds of instruments and effects, hardware and software, so I know what you mean. Being an ex-NI customer, Ive learned some hard lessons about the direction some brands are moving in, in terms of sound design, longevity, etc.

Syntakt, like most Elektron boxes, is a groovebox though. I love the parameters available on the Syntakt because those parameters are almost always the most useful in sound design. Adding tons more programmable parameters to such a device would bog it down, and I have other hardware and software synths (often controlled by Syntakt) to do deeper sound design on.

Bareback weed grower, with cat that sleeps on gear, cause the gear gets all the attention.

Fair point! This is what gives me pause in selling the lad. The immediacy really is nice, particularly for percussion. I think (ironically) it’s the “syn” part that always feels more rigid to me for the kind of music I’m making.

I think the almost constant presence of Punch, Decay and Overdrive for every digital SY machine is a waste of parameters. Decay is redundant with the Amp section handling that side of things. At least Punch got sidelined with Swarm and Bits. I feel Overdrive should have been on the Amp page which could have freed up another parameter slot.

I’m rarely satisfied with anything I make with the digital SY machines. There’s so much I love about the ST but, if anything, I’m drifting back to the MPC Live as a groovebox and ARII as drum machine.

Sorry, that was a bit off-topic… My worry with the DN2 is that it might be as underwhelming as the ST with the non original DN machines. The OG DN is probably as much of that flavour as I want (although I am curious about the FM Drum machine and would love to see that ported to the OG DN).

Right, well I guess I dont see any of that as an issue, and I have no trouble pulling sounds out of my syntakt that light me right up. If 1 machine isnt doing it for me Ill find another, or tweak it until its good. Or, I use other drum machines, synths, samples via my DAWs.

If the DNII is as awesome as the ST, which from all the research Ive done it appears to be, it will be a perfect companion for my ST, though I wish the ST also had 128 steps. In my brain, ST + DNII sounds like a dream, and I cant wait to get my hands on it! Ill probably wait until Overbridge 2 is done though, as well as for any bugs to get squashed. ; )

Porting the FM drum to the OG DN would be the coolest Christmas gift @Elektron could give us :christmas_tree::santa:

I wish in the 4 empty spots under the offsets we could get fixed frequency on/off.

I don’t even particularly need a DN but I’ve always wanted one and I ran across one nearby for $300. I still find the sub-$400 prices hard to believe. So tempting…

Bang goes 375 euro-smackers. It’s a good price let’s face it. Looking forward to my first ever OG Digitone - thanks, this thread!

Sure I saw somebody mod theirs so the screen was a different colour.

You could put a different color screen in, if you had a compatible part (and the necessary skills). But we appreciate the yellow color of the mk1, so we wouldn’t swap it for the white. When I say we, I mean me.
