sold a decent tascam 424 which is bulky and needed a lot of power and thought what’s a hardware equivalent in a smarter form factor and I can say the SP1 tape looper firmware is a down-broken 424 workflow and the actual iteration of the firmware is superstable and really authentic, it’s lovely.
the rocker switch is like the tempo dial on the tascam and behaves so natural and fine, longer overdubbing after the initial track length and 4 tapes a 4 tracks where each tape/song can have its own tempo and stems of course, no sample length limit when recording, except the internal memory, the tempo can be set via rocker before recording to have the ability to do varispeed tricks with different tracks, pitch one up-record another-pitch both down, there’s really no latency because its audio reactive, really nice speaker aswell.
it is a digital tascam 424 via USB-C without ever cutting a physical loop, rebuilding a cassette or using more space then necessary + no cheap components when repairing a unit. this is such a TE device and now is the right time tho. people are awesome.
(yes, the 424s preamps aren’t there but a mutable shelves or the alm PE-2 will do the OG saturation, but digitally, this App does it aswell…

what are some use cases for this? seems like something i may be able to use in my work but interested in hearing some examples of people usin it!
- Midi Controller with templates + chord keyboard with fader octaves,5ths,7ths etc
- Digital tape loop machine with varispeed, bpm detection and midi clock out
- speaker for usb audio with things that don’t have a speaker
- external tape for the XY simply by connecting

External tape for the XY? You mean if you flash the SP-1 Tape Looper?

exactly. it’s fun to record 2xy tracks per SP1 track and have them as stems or just a longer stem on one track, as I’ve never done a factory reset to the xy it’s a good capture for my last active project and then I’ll start blank I guess. 
for me it’s the tape looper that’s fascinating

exactly, it’s around ~103€ shipped to Europe and ~72€via new republic international shipping.
i played with @virtual_flannel 's drum machine and bass synth firmwares yesterday, those are pretty sweet. they arent officially released but you can find them on the discord. excited to see where the firmwares go next

I have spent the last few weeks trying to find a decent 424 second hand , so just picked up one of these, not sure how long it will take to arrive (I’m in ireland and ordered from new republic) but this seems pretty cool on paper!

no chance really, got mine for 25,- sold it for 425,-. it’s great and the preamps sound lovely but it’s big and 40 year old plastic encoder / fader shafts aren’t so cool to maintain, it’s a piece of history and nice to look at but holding a ^stem playing SP1^ the size of 1/2 of a normal cassette, overdubbing, varispeeding this lil thing will set you 40years apart into the future , the design language is incredible.
still can‘t believe it took 7 years, 7 years of thinking there’s a vaporware TE product which could do all sorts of things if somebody would take the time ^^ people did.
Imagine Elektron OS open sourced, the seq would do 4d parameter locking, incredible how fast and reliable people can do codework these days, much love tho for all people involved in such things 🫰🏼

So are you recording in with a USB c interface? Thinking of what I’ll try and pair this with, thinking could be nice to pair with the ableton move
you need to try what you think you want to do but the only audio in port is the usb c port. you can monitor via headphone jack, which makes it a nice usbc to trs adapter. basically works on anything class compliant but Elektrons won‘t. you need to try

tape looper got a decent update within TWO hours after requesting workflow enhancements, these are now live
SP-1 Tape Looper update — 48 kHz, hands-free recording, independent loops
The transfer tool bug is fixed — it was a USB receive bug in the firmware, not your cables. Reflash and it connects.
The bigger news, new release:
48 kHz. The looper now runs at full rate. The reliability problems that forced the old 24 kHz build are found and fixed — four tracks plus recording, no crackle.
Latched recording. Hold a track button to start a take, then let go — it keeps recording until you tap the same button to stop. Long takes are hands-free.
Independent loops. Every take loops at exactly its own length — a 3-second phrase free-runs over a 17-second bed, no quantization to track 1, no silence padding. The first take still sets the beat grid for the LEDs and MIDI clock; everything after is free.
The transfer site understands the new behaviour too — uploaded clips keep their own length.
Flash sp1_looper.bin from the repo as usual (Track 1 + Track 4 at power-on, then solderless.engineering). Note: the first boot reformats loop storage once, so download anything you want to keep first.
