Sonicware Lofi-12 XT

I’ve compiled a list of nice to haves. But tbh it’s the first bit of gear in a while where I don’t have major issues with a particular thing. Gonna send it to them

  • Change roll value while holding pad.
  • When I turn knob A in SND page to choose a sample, open the sample slots window. Easier to scroll in context when you have multiple samples loaded.
  • When Pressing A knob, add the option to do FUNC + A to open slots manager.
  • When browsing samples, if I was in the Pool, remember that, instead of resetting to the Tag browser (which is nice, but I don’t tag everything).
  • When browsing samples in folders can this be done without having to index everything? I guess not, but I wanted to ask since it’s a bit annoying.
  • Copy pattern. Couldn’t find a way to copy it.
  • Chords in PAD mode would be a nice nice addition.
  • In SLICE mode, a grid option would be cool (like Smpltrek), or even simpler… divide sample in X slices. Useful for loops and then you can place slices on the grid to create a fake “time stretch” effect

Does the mixtape function record what’s coming through the inputs? And if so does it record them in stereo? Or does it collapse to mono?

Considering they got the “Downbeat divider” on the lofi-12 I think that can absolutely happen for the XT.

Would love something digi-like with LFOs destinations but maybe its something sonicware cannot copy? Would be interesting to see someone open up the product to know what the hardware inside is.

Unfortunately not, I tried this by coincidence just now, at first I thought maybe it was because I did not have the ext in fx setting turned to on, but even when it is on it does not record the inputs. I hope it will be added later as it does limit its usefulness a bit.

The mixtape itself does record in stereo.

There are a few other things that I hope get addressed in future updates:

Currently it is only possible to slice upto 15 sections.

The cued mute function prevents a track from being selected because it uses the function button, bit of an oversight IMHO.

Not as performance friendly as the Liven version, they did add a performance mode to Smpltrek so maybe they will add one to the XT. I’d like to see the 4 encoders be custom mappable for performance mode.

The sample naming/saving could do with a bit of refinement.

Plus the stuff @alexbuga mentioned.

Its a solid launch firmware though.

That’s a pity. I wonder if maybe the CPU doesn’t have enough horse power to record the master and the inputs at the same time while still functioning as a sampler/groovebox?

One thing that stands out to me from the manual is that the “direct-jump”/instant-pattern-change feature requires you to make two different button combos in a row… which doesn’t seem very fluid? Like on the AR/A4 it’s a single combo which is nice and fluid. Have you been using this feature at all? I feel like it’s important as there is no fill mode (yet)

Very cool box! Will probably order one once I see a few more videos

It doesn’t work as desired in the manual (func+play) but actually opens the system menu, it does however work by opening pattern menu, then func+step 1-16 to instantly switch pattern, but then it exits you from the pattern menu, bit of a pain TBH and not too useful.

Also, not that I needed it badly, but there’s no sample reverse.
Anyway, don’t be let down by what we added here as “negative” feedback.

This box is fun. I don’t have the buyers remorse feeling I had with the Yamaha Seqtrak.

TIP: When you load samples to play them like melodies and chords, make sure to turn off 12bit mode. It seems to like it ON by default

They have some demo patterns that were 100% recorded with external keyboards, and boy that 1 sample of a rhodes can sound really dope with a phaser and some reverb.

Check out their demos on the website.

The 12bit mode can sound nice on drum kits, it gives a nice early digital drum machine sound, a bit like the Casio RZ1.

In fact the LoFi 12 Liven reminds me of a Casio RZ1 very much.

Kind of got the RZ1 vibe from some of the videos tbh!

I had one for a while but the thing was massive and the rim and clap channels (the best of the sounds IMO) weren’t working. I’ve pulled the trigger on a Lofi-12 XT and am hoping it can be what I wanted the RZ1 to be (and about 8 times smaller)

Sonicware has a good history of evolving their hardware in firmware updates. I believe that they will add many of the missing bits. I’ve heard that reversing samples is coming.

Re. Copying patterns does the copy button not work? Copy + pressing the pattern number? I am on a trip and only brought my Tracker Mini. I regret not bringing the Lofi XT.

Tried various combos, and couldn’t get it to work.

With resampling: can you only resample one track at a time? Are any of the master FX applied while resampling?

yep

How to copy a pattern… reply from the mothership:
“How to copy a pattern: You can make a copy of the pattern with the Save As function by simply entering the PATTREN SAVE menu with func+PTN, selecting a free pattern and pressing OK.”

Also batch #2 of nice to haves has been sent:
• Don’t loop samples on preview. Mostly they’re short samples (drum hits, chords etc, and it sounds weird). If I have a long loop… I can easily go back and forth to the next sample and preview it again.

• Adjusting sample pitch would be easier in semitones. And use FN for finer adjustments. Most of us use semitones.

• When adding slices, I see I can move the cursor with the arrow keys as well. I would love to be able to add slices with the OK button like on Smpltrek. Less strain for the A knob

• I got it to crash a few times while deleting some recordings. Probably they were still used in the slots. I had to hard reset by pulling out the batteries. This messed up the file index.

• Speaking of deleting, it would be lovely to be able to purge unused samples from the slots. I guess you’d have to do a forEach in every pattern from the project and it’ll probably take a while, but well worth it considering the load / save times for the project when it gets bogged with samples.

• It would be cool when browsing samples via folders, to be able to see and load them without the indexing. The tag browser is amazing, but whenever the index gets corrupted (like if batteries die), it takes forever to reindex. a toggle in System settings would be awesome to disable it and just use folders like on Smpltrek.

Hi guys, pretty interested in this machine. I was wondering if there was possibility to adjust envelope (attack) settings in slice mode. Per slice or all slices at once?
Also do you know whether they have implemented zero crossing in slice mode?
Watched a few YT vids but couldn’t see it.
Thanks

I’m bit confused as to why the sample pool is so large if there is only one sample per track…

Is sample locking available?

Sample locking is a thing, yes.
Also it’s like Digitakt. The sample pool is available across patterns in a project.

No 0 crossing, but you can easily zoom in.
AMP env is for the whole track. If you have a drum kit (a wave file with multiple hits one after the other), you slice it, but you’d be better off disabling the env, or setting a high release.

If you have a melodic sample, and you chop it, you can let them ring out one on top of the other or set mute groups (per slice). I don’t find it that annoying honestly.

You can easily copy tracks or param pages (like Digitakt), so you can duplicate your kit on track 2, and IDK… trim your open hihats with the env.

Thanks so much for the quick answer. When you say amp env is for the whole track in slice mode does that mean that env setting will affect each slices the same way?
So, say we have a chopped melodic sample sliced, am I able to use mute group + env setting at the same time?
That way you have clean sample chops and no click and pops
Thanks
