Does anyone know of a small (1/3u or pedal) sized compressor with true sidechain/ducking capabilities?
I currently have my dark trinity mixing through the Octatrack and then running into an FMR RNC (using a sub 150hz filter in the sidechain) which goes to the mains.
From my understanding the FMR’s sidechain doesn’t work as a ducking tool so I need one more comp in the chain to do only that.
Any ideas?
Edit : I don’t know where I got the idea the FMR doesn’t duck. Seems like it does according to their faqs
I forgot to mention I need it to be stereo which I don’t think this one is. I didn’t really consider euro rack format though so that is a whole new area I should look at.
Yea, it will duck, it’s just that the side chain filter input jack wasn’t designed the same as other compressor’s side chain “key inputs”.
It was designed as a send/return.
But, as RNC states, if you do not connect the TIP side of the insert cable, it can duck.
Personally, I’d buy a second RNC and use it for that effect, and keep the one you have, with the HPF.
So I actually had a second fmr rnc that I recently sold and before I started to regret that, I remembered why I had to use the current one with a highpass filter (150hz); it felt muddy on the low end.
I need to find one that is as transparent as possible as I really like the FMR sound with the hp filter and would like not to colour it too much.
Unfortunately a rack comp is too big in my current case.
I remember dbx came out with a small little desktop comp awhile back but can’t seem to find one anywhere. Not sure if it had sidechain though.
Yea until getting to about -8dB gain reduction, with a HPF in the side chain loop, I found it as transparent as other hardware compressors.
It has a very VERY fast attack for a hardware compressor. So try not to use the fastest setting, as this can distort the low end, even with a HPF in play.
Try an attack between the 0.6 and 2.0ms settings.
I typically end up somewhere around 1.0ms. Fast enough to limit peaks if ratio is 10:1 or higher, but slow enough to not distort the low end.
Well dang, now I do regret selling off the second one. I didn’t lose my butt on it so buying again isn’t too bad. I’ll experiment with the one I have in the meantime.
Thanks!!
I can’t tell if those jacks on the back are capable of stereo in/out or not. It seems possible as they show the op-1 with it.
This would actually fit a bit better than a 2nd fmr.
Thanks!!
Oh snap! That looks wicked especially with MIDI control (sequencing from OT would be great!).
Seems their website is questionable as I’m getting security warnings when I go there.
I pushed through and wrote them about price/availability. Hope I hear from them. I think I can squeeze this in my case and those extra options seem amazing.
Thank you for this!
Edit: Price is $369. Kinda steep but seems worth it with all the functionality
I never thought that a compressor could be a MUSICAL instrument
You can make really complex/interesting ducking effect with it
Controls are really good , intuitive and easy to access
And with the Digitakt , you can access to all the parameters with the 8 knobs , and the Program Change is REALLY HELPFULL when you make differents song/set
I’m really impressed , the price was really hard for me too , but it’s WORTH every penny !
(Nb : the creator of it is REALLY responsive and helpfull if you need anything , you can even contact him personally on Instagram , and try to get a price )
That’s great to hear! I think I’m sold, just waiting to hear about ordering.
Quick question; can the side chain audio be fed to the audio out? I want to run the kick direct out of my RYTM to the SC input but will have to duplicate the signal (probably a mixer or something) to get non-compressed kick
