Single oscillator love

i think i am in love with analog single oscillator synths or synths that have a nice single oscillator tone when reduced to just that - things that i have loved and lost in that vein have been many many mc202s, a few old bass stations, a couple of little mam mb33s and now i have my current lovely sounding Vermona mono lancet '15 which sounds best when vco1 is on its own

i know this is probably a dumb question but why do some single oscillators sound shitty and some sound amazing?

i love the a4 mk1 allover but its raw single oscillator tone only excites me on the triangle wave, the others sound a bit nasty on their own

anybody else have mad love for nice sounding single oscillators?

The mother 32 oscillator sounded pretty from when I played it in a store.

As an extension of that, the Behringer Crave sounded good from demos.

But you’re right, I need to work on my single oscillator synths

Did you play around with the oscillator levels and width for saw and pulse?

The Micromoog sounds great, such a nice presence and fullness to its sound.

I guess this has been brought up many times but the basic A4 oscillator always sounded a little lifeless to me. Like most Elektron synths it’s not about the «tone» though, but how you can bring it to life with the sequencer interaction.

The4 behringer ms-1 is a joy and i DON’T FKK CARE WHAT PURISTS SAY. FILTER FM and solid build quality for aq ridiculous price. ok so the envelopes and behaviour aren’t the same… so what?.. take it for what it is. I bet Roland couldn’t get that the same either. MS1 = FUN and JOY

yeah i’ve had a4 mk1 for four years and always loved it as a total unit but found the single oscillator tones less inspiring than other synths - have played with the parameters to death and like the triangle sound a lot - there’s a preset based on the triangle i think called ‘warm feelings’ which is just so good i use it all the time

this has been on my radar for a while - fun and joy sound like a nice combo

i had a little phatty once which scared the hell out of me - but if i can find a cheap vintage moog that needs repair i might jump on it

Hard to use tunnel vision to focus in on it since it’s not a mono synth, but roland juno is also single oscillator and I’ve always loved the juno sound. It’s not what you’d call squelchy, but that one oscillator is a classic. It just also happens to be polyphonic

so true! if only they had made a desktop version…

Great thread, I loved the oscillator on my kilpatrick phenol, very pure, I love minimal music and the sounds of single oscillators, probably why I love the sounds on pan sonic tracks
This video by look mum no computer is fantastic using old test equipment at willem twee studio

The Abyss!

And like the Juno also polyphonic.

I love the old Roland monosynths with/using only 1 oscillator. A single oscillator is just much beefier than when you have 2 or more beating against eachother (thus fluctuating in volume/presence). Of course both are useful for different types of sounds. But I fully embrace the celebration of good single oscillator sounds/synths

yes it looks and sounds crazy - these don’t come up very often but would probably scratch the juno in desktop format itch

if i can find one i will

I totally prefer single oscillator monosynths over multiple oscillator, minimoog style architecture. That kind of detuned fuzzy sound you get with multiple oscillators to me just dilutes the clarity. I want sounds that are clear and direct.

The SH101 is the greatest monosynth ever made. The basic tone of the the square or the saw through that filter is amazing.

At the moment, I’m absolutely loving the Intellijel Cascadia. It can do that single oscillator SH101 thing perfectly. There is a second oscillator, but it’s not even routed to the mixer: the default setup is it to use it as a modulation oscillator. And because Intellijel oscillators are so precise, when you do use the second oscillator it maintains that precise sound and doesn’t do that detuned sound, unless you want it to.

I absolutely LOVE the saw wave on rytm’s SY CHIP, it’s so gritty and rich, but I think that the addition of overdrive and the master distortion plus some machine noise is what makes it unique, I don’t think there’s something special about the saw wave itself rather the combination of the signal path, floor noise/compressor noise is what adds this beautiful imperfection making it beautiful to my ears.

yeah the rytm sy chip saw wave is lovely but i had to let it go to that great gear fund in the sky…

Mother 32’s single oscillator sounds so damned good. I’m also an absolute sucker for the SH-101.
