Single Cycle Waveforms + Tutorials

I’ve been on a deep dive of single cycle waveforms that lead to me downloading every collection or pack I could find and then eventually wanting to make my own. I was originally just going to share my scw’s but after going down the rabbit hole looking for more, I think there’s value in having a growing list of places to find scw packs, how-to’s and tutorials. I’ll do my best to keep this list updated!

Places to download single cycle waveforms:

Places with tools to make SCW’s:

Tonverk tutorial:

  1. Select SRC machine SINGLE PLAYER
  2. Put a SCW into the sample slot
  3. Set PLAY MODE to Forward Loop (or Reverse Loop)
  4. If you would like the ADSR to behave correctly, open track setup and change LOOP MODE to Continuous (Continuous makes the sample loop through both the envelope’s sustain and release phases)

(Note: you can also loop single cycle samples with the Grainer machine although as of firmware 1.2.1 there is still a clicking sound between grains)

Digitakt tutorial:

  1. Use OneShot machine (if using Digitakt II)
  2. Put a SCW into the sample slot
  3. Set PLAY MODE to Forward Loop (or Reverse Loop)

(DT doesn’t have “loop modes” like on Tonverk and will always loop until the end of the ADSR)

Amazing share thanks!

That’s a lot of SCW content. Anywhere you suggest starting with first? Like which of these links do you think is the best place to load content that works well with tonverk? I assume maybe your google drive collection though your naming convention makes it hard to know what each SCW is

Thanks!

All of these are fun and functional but if I were to give a recommendation it would be to start with the packs that are tuned to C to make it a little easier on yourself. The Adventure Kid pack is HUGE but is tuned a little off (IIRC it’s down two semitones so easy to adjust for).

Edit: the second one on the list by Void Vertex is a great starting point!

I thought a lot about this haha. Does it matter? And if so, what the heck do you call each waveform??? I guess it would be fun to come up with names like “kind of a triangle” and “jagged square with a bend” … but idk how helpful it is. I ultimately decided that it would be more fun and inspiring to randomly scroll through a list and test them out and use my ear instead of descriptors, but that’s just my current mood.

this is perfect timing. i’m using single-cycle waveforms to make patches on my MPC 1K and they’re a ton of fun, been learning a lot about synthesis in general doing it this way.

A useful thing to do is put a bunch in a single .wav file so they can be sliced in the Octatrack. That opens up some fun possibilities.

Fair points lol!

It feels like continuous should be the default loop mode.

thanks for sharing. Can you use sample start to select the osc phase at trig? Does it still loop the entire wave if sample start is in the middle?

edit: yes, sample start is independent of loop points

although setup for Monomachine this has turned into a general purpose single cycle lab. https://www.elektronauts.com/t/waft-wave/

also i saw @taro link to packs in og post, but he has some great single cycle/wavetable software too.

Agreed! I was definitely stumped at first as to why it didn’t behave like I remembered my Digitakt behaving…

Added to the list! Thanks!

same I thought it was a bug - hadn’t clocked it in the manual.

OT can play wavetables !
(Slice mode off to modulate them)

single cycle waves into filter folder on the tonverk is :boom:

but we need modulation of fx parameters

This is the most relevant tool for this topic.

You can convert waveforms created in Waft Wave into SCW files for samplers using this tool.
