It seems that you can’t change A4 mini keyboard’s octave while browsing for a new sound. If yes… please tell me how! You can since OS v1.1 that by the way was released after this post.
So the best (a good) option to preview a sound on its different octaves is to use an external MIDI controller/keyboard/pad your OT trigs in chromatic mode, etc.
The thing is that if you set your MIDI controller to the A4 track’s MIDI channel you are about to load a new sound, you won’t be able to preview the candidate sound, instead you’ll always be listening to the actual sound.
And here is where the Auto Channel comes in handy.
Instead of setting your external controller to the A4 Track’s MIDI channel, set it to use the Auto Channel’s channel (Function+Global/MIDI Config/MIDI Channels-> Auto Channel)
In this way your controller will be always playing the selected track sound and when entering browse mode your MIDI controller will be playing the candidate sound.
I know that many elektronauts here already knows this, but I just realize about it now so may be it can helps someone else.
Obviously with +drive everything will have been reworked. Wait until the new OS comes along to see if it differs. With 4000 sounds it surely will, the AK has a new knob. There’ll be an equivalent for A4 for sure. Let’s wait ! Auto channel works with preview I think

Sorry! I’m so used to being able to do it that I forgot it wasn’t possible before OS 1.1.
I won’t be using a computer or daw, so yes it does have a 5 pin midi out. So would I just plug it in and follow the above directions? Any other tips for getting the best use out of this type of keyboard controller? Please forgive me I’m a total noob with midi and synths

I think you won’t have any problem using your KXL as external MIDI keyboard with the AF.
Are you using any sequencer?
