Silly tip for beginners- previewing sounds with MIDI controller

basically, the way I do it is…once midi KB, OT, and A4 all on same auto-channel

I select the midi track on the OT, if you set that track to the auto-channel it will pass through to the A4, so you can sequence or just live jam on the keyboard with that OT midi track selected, then as you change tracks on the A4 it plays the sound of the selected A4 track (while staying on the same OT track with the auto-channel)

the cool thing about it is, you can live record some trigs on the OT midi track and if it’s set to the auto-channel it will just use whatever track you select on the A4, but then if you want to lock it to one of the A4 tracks, just change the midi channel of the OT track to the same channel as the A4 track you want

they work beautifully together

So let me see if I got it clear, do you use MIDI tracks on the OT to sequence your AF?

Most of the time I only use one midi track on the OT as a through to the A4.

It is set on the auto-channel which allows me to use the midi keyboard to talk to the A4 through the OT, it will play the sound of whatever track is selected on the A4.

I can set the A4 or the OT (or both) to live record mode and then record a pattern. On occasion, I will actually record a pattern on the OT that just gets the sound from the A4 but most of the time it’s just live record mode (or grid) on the A4 going through the auto-channel midi track on the OT.

Ok, so you use one track on the OT to act as a pass thru for the AF, is that?

yep, I guess you could call it the auto-channel track

so for example, if your auto-channel is 11

midi kb going into OT is set to 11
OT auto-channel is 11
midi track on OT set to channel 11
A4 auto-channel set to 11

now when on that track on the OT, I’m playing the currently selected track on the A4

if you want to zero in on just one track on the A4, all you have to do is change the midi channel on the OT to that channel

for example, if you left A4 default channel 1-4 on track 1-4, you want to sequence only track 1, on the OT midi track change it’s channel to 1

change it back to channel 11 and you are sequencing whatever track you have actively selected on the A4 again

cool stuff, I imagine some people will find this thread useful

I followed the above directions and read manuals with still no success. I’m trying to use my microkorg xl as a controller, however it only plays the sound of track 1 and it won’t play other track sounds or preview sounds. Can someone please help me out with a step by step walk through on how to set it up? Was thinking of getting a Qunexus and selling the korg, would that be that much better/easier?

Just set the AUTO Channel in AF to 1 and tell me how it goes

Sounds like your controller is set to channel 1 (instead of your auto-channel).

I use the qunexus but you have to set it to the auto-channel for everything to work as I have described (it will default to channel 1).

you can set your auto-channel to 1 like gbravetti suggested but keep in mind that track 1 on the analog four defaults to channel 1, and I believe track 1 on the OT also defaults to channel 1…so you need to adjust accordingly

thanks for this great info.
i’ve always wondered what ‘auto-channel’ meant, and been manually changing mini channels from the midi controller, and changing tracks on the octa/a4 — to many steps! — i will try what you suggested tomorrow and see if it’s now more handson, including trying out presets…

Is it somehow possible to transpose the played pattern via Midi/Auto Channel? I want to trigger the transpose of a sequence from the A4 via Miditrack in the DAW.
Auto Channel is working fine, but only the internal keyboard can be used for transposes, no MIDI???

You can play patterns by MIDI with custom transpositions using the MULTI MAP. Pag.51

i.e you can set C3 to play pattern A1 in with t=0, then C3# to play pattern A1 with t=+7. That way you can control transposition from your daw.
