Hi guys, I’m new to Elektronauts fam, and just saw what this gear can do with easy manipulations of LFO, swing, volume etc. for now I can’t share with you smth special , but sure u got smth
Lfo on start point or amp envelope or volume in just about any configuration makes high hats do things differently. Or go for something more manual where you can tweak using parameter locks and do patterns with volume or panning or anything really.
LFO to the delay send. With different timings you can create some great variations that are still in sync.
Works best in the Octatrack track by designing your own LFO but I use it on the other boxes too.
its bad but I still don’t have octa. Digitakt new user ) have you tried it on DT?
Yeah, I use it there most often. It’s where I “discovered” it as the DT was my first Elektron box and is my primary drum machine. I use my Digitone/A4MKii/OT Mkii occasionally for percussive duties though. It really depends on the sound I’m aiming for. They all have a certain flavor.
I got A4 mk2 but I never used it like drum machine. do you have any advices ?
The device has patches already on it that are drum/percussive sounds. You can experiment with those.
There’s a ton of examples on YouTube of ways to get the most out of the 4 tracks. I don’t have any advice that will provide a better example than a few videos. I’ll try to post a few of my favorites later this evening. I’m headed to dinner now.
it will be great !
On my Machinedrum, Lfo to decay amount is always fun. Almost simulates open / closed hats in a sense. Don’t overdo it though. Lfo to volume is always helpful to get some movement in your hihats as well. Simulates velocity.
On Machine Drum
-
(For unique sounds) Use snare drums and pitch up and cut off low end
-
(For movement) LFO or parameter locks on retrig lenght. Try Plock with slides.
-
(Stereo Space) Same hihats panned left and right on two tracks. Use one to the trig other in kit setting. Change start point or freq mod on one to make sounds separate into stereo space.
-
(For unique sounds) Take any longer sample and set random LFO on start point. Hold 0- and decay short. Cut off low end.
Sometimes I just hit live record and tweak things mostly on the amp page: decay, volume, delay and reverb sends, maybe some other page parameters too like filter. I stop tweaking after a pass to hear the loop and if I don’t like it tweak another pass, listen again… Have gotten some groovy results…
thnx for tips ! I will try. but first of all I need to search most of everything u wrote lol.
that is I’m usually doing . good technique but random
Hence the “sometimes” I do that… I don’t mind some happy accidents now and again. Admittedly drum sequencing is not my strong suit, but I’m up for getting better! I spend a lot more time on my Octatrack than my AR, I think it’s a bit jealous… Just got to put more time into it…
same , thats why I made this topic
Right on, I don’t know DT so I’m not sure if I could translate easily. maybe someone with both the MD an DT could translate.
If you don’t mind filling your sample slots with ~25 hat sounds, you can assign one to the track and then set the LFO to sample slot. Gets a lot of variation and can lead to cool sounding HH (or any other) sounds.
On top of this:
If you set up a chain of hats (using something like octachainer), then put it in slice mode, put down some trigs and set a hold LFO to sample start, you will get a LOT of cool variation on the hats.
But for whatever reason (I nearly made a thread about this) the hat hits you get aren’t consistent… After a few passes through the sequence you’ll get different sounding hats. Can be neat for the “longer than four bars variation” effect, but can be maddening if you have a really nice groove going. I bet it’s because the LFO is free running and doesn’t stay in sync.
I know op said he doesn’t have an Octa, but I think it’s possible to get chains on a sample of the rytm. Not 100% sure.
an a4 hat trick I used once:
Make a hat sound. 16th note spam.
Fiddle with the amp env settings and an exponential LFO on sustain/volume/whatever:
50% LFO phase gets 32nd note spam, tweak LFO depth for easy control of the balance.
But then: fiddle with the phase to “swing” the 32nd notes, but at that rate, it doesn’t come off as a “swing” but as a cool ratcheting effect. Fun to perform.
On OT you can use “sync trig” under lfo trig type and it resets the lfo on each track cycle…
