I never heard about it at the time, everything I know is from reading this thread. I am also surprised to find it doesn’t have velocity.
.
I hate to break it to you but if a 5-6 year old thread I’ve never noticed before suddenly become active I tend to skim it or skip to the most recent months/weeks rather than reading the whole thing, unless it’s of compelling personal interest.
It’s basically a nicely designed SH-101 clone with a rechargeable battery inside. The SH-101 never had velocity or aftertouch either.
No velocity. No delivery.
Ist there any new sounddemo or Video out there?
There ist Just one Video from the superbooth, and i don’t have a cluen what the heck the presenter is doing there…
This is like the Fyre festival of the synth world
Oh man what I wouldn’t give for a somehow-even-more-limited edition Ja-Rule signature version of this synth.
I guess I never knew it had no velocity or aftertouch, but always assumed so, with those short throw keys.
my greater concern would be that it seems the keybed is proprietary. so if this thing ever ships and you break a key by dropping it while going to a gig in five years, will it be possible to get a new keybed? I guess that goes for the whole design, really: it’s 100% proprietary by a non-established company with a sketchy past. the chances of getting parts if you need them are as slim as the profile of this thing.
The other day I was thinking about how it’s basically like an MS-1 inside of a large OP-1 shell.
Not visually, but fundamentally.
Always a good point, are Rolli’s keyboards more serviceable these days?
Roland S.L.I.M. keys had velocity. The whole of the PCR-1 was only 4mm taller than the SB. And its enclosure rose up above the keys in a wedge rather than having the keys rise above it as in the SB. So I imagine the actual throws were pretty similar in practice. And that’s, what, 20-year-old technology?
And I know. The original SH-101 had no velocity, so there’s an argument for it not being there.
But the SH-01a supported velocity. The MS-101 also. The super popular 1oh1 mod adds velocity mod support to the original (though not keybed, obviously). And in the year of our lord 2025 even the OP-1 and 404 have velocity sensitivity now.
So there’s also an argument that people might be unpleasantly surprised by velocity’s absence. When there’s an argument to be made for both sides, the best move is to remove ambiguity by calling it out.
Definitely feels like a 101 clone in a tuxedo. I don’t recall if their mission statement was to clone the 101 but that’s the way it’s feeling since most of the upgrades are more superficial that QOL.
Did the job it intended to, though, very sleek and modern vintage, or something. Still think it’s a beautiful design but still have not heard the 2025 price, only the quote from 2023 and curious to hear the take of those who have been waiting for so long to try it.
Just a quick note that I have received one.
It looks great, it sounds great, and I’m really happy with it after just playing around for a wee bit here and there when time allows.
The manufacturer brought a couple to Superbooth for backers he had been in contact with in advance.
I can in no way speak on behalf of his plans going further, except that he told me that the units for the backers are mostly done, and he is going through the process of figuring out fulfillment shipping.
On a personal note I’ve been a little cautious posting here, because of the negative sentiments about the project that keeps being brought up. I have no previous affiliation with the manufacturer, apart from having conversations with him in a friendly manner over the past couple of times he has been at Superbooth.
I hope the discourse here can focus on what people will eventually be doing with this product, and I am thankful for the handful of people here trying to assert that as well.
I’m sure there are a lot who may have questions about it, and I will try to upload upload some sound when I have a little more time. But as someone who does not really make videos, I ask for your understanding that I’m not gonna be making any reviews or full rundowns
Managed to shoot a simple video that give a small impression of the unit.
It is by no means an interesting piece of music, of in any way meant to demonstrate the capabilities of the unit or myself in full. But it may give you an impression of some of what it is able to do.
Syntakt has a Kick and Hi-hat, and is the main clock for the Machinedrum. On the MD there is an GND-IM
machine that creates an impulse which is routed to output C
, and further into the SB01’s trig
input. The MD pattern is a rhythmically syncopated pattern [xx_xx_xx_xx_xxx_], so this trigger input drives the SB01 sequencer, SH-101 style.
The output of the SB01 goes back into the Syntakt’s external input, where it has a bit of reverb and delay added to it. It is not routed through the FX block.
Edit: Apologies, I was made aware the link was initially password protected. It should have been fixed now.
Thanks for that, sounding good
What are your general impressions of the build quality please? That seems to have been a focus from the start so I’m curious how it ended up feeling in the end.
Also, how are you finding the keyboard? A rubber dome type mechanism sounds… Interesting.
Sounds great!
Thanks! And these type of quiet comments into online forums are really valuable balancing out the “this is my take”-stuff.
