SB-1 Space Bee

We don’t know that. This is speculation. We could very reasonably put forth other possibilities.

( ADDED : This second paragraph is not directed toward you warpigs330. )

And accusations of criminal fraud is way way out there. So please cool it.

It’s simple engineering. You take the current draw, and just multiply by the number of hours you want to have the charge to run, and spec a battery of that size.

Better question might be why you’d spec for twenty four hours, but that might just be the battery they found and picked.

I don’t know why he said only 24 hours. Why not 240 hours?

In the interview he says that you can power other devices from it, so it must be overspec’d.

You’re correct that it’s a bit of an odd number to shoot for. Also, since I assume that it would require a cell of significant physical size to do what they’re claiming and still fit within that ultra slim body, and be safe, I was more curious as to whether it’s a lithium polymer or which technology they ultimately settled on which can perform in such a way, and fit comfortably inside the case along with all other components.

More current is another cell in parallel.

You’re right – hadn’t thought of that but they overspec’d it to power other devices too.

Extra current will also help keep the device working longer despite loss in battery capacity over time.

OT battery tech discussion

Definitely an interesting discussion for another topic but as I’m sure you know, if you starve analog components they perform very differently and sometimes erratically, so I do have some questions slash concerns about this magical battery system, however it’s probably really only secondary to the successful / proven launch of this product that I would be concerned about getting specific answers.

Just a bit of a head scratcher

Did I accuse them of fraud? I specifically said “I would be willing to bet” And even if I didn’t, using Kickstarter success as a means of proving demand to raise investment capital is not anywhere near fraud, it is pretty standard kickstarter business practice. And as for the kickstarter funds, They raised less than $200,000 over 5 years ago. There is no way that is enough money to actually support the people working on it and finish this device over the course of over 5 years.

The second paragraph wasn’t about you. I edited my post to be clear on this. Apologies. But there were accusations being made that, were out of bounds unless there is some pretty solid evidence.

We really don’t know how much they spent and when, nor how they raised money in other ways.

There are many ways to make technical stuff happen.

To be clear, i’ve been very critical toward Superlative; harsh even. See my posts above or over in the Crowdfunding thread.

But at the same time they ( appear !! ) to be completing the project, and did stick with it. We’ll see how well they did.

There is no way though getting around how crazy late and delayed the Space Bee was.

anyway i think this is a beautiful synth

It is !

Just spitballing here but likely they took up some work on the side to make ends meet which also pushed out the timelines.

It’s easy to forget there was basically 2 years where nobody could get any components due to covid.

Analog synths are pretty light on power requirements i thought too, esp relative to digital stuff, at least that seemed to be the case in euro land.

Just the one video from superbooth 25. Are they being shunned by the media?
I’m still wowed by the industrial design.

They squandered all their good will years ago, now they are just SuperLate

I wish there were some videos showing this thing actually working. Dude in the last posted video is moving sliders but nothing is happing.

Saturday I’ve visited Superbooth 2025 and stopped by the Superlative stand. Both product strike with great industrial design and feel definitely luxurious. I played SB-01, first thing that I’ve noticed: the keyboard was surprisingly good- very responsive, easy to play. Naturally I’ve tried to use some aftertouch , but didn’t feel any response. On my question “does it have aftertouch” I got the answer:" just on/off keys, no velocity, no aftertouch". Well… I respect anybody undertaking the task to reimagine a classic synth and bring it to todays standards, I’m sure this is very time and money consuming task - but my feeling is that the purpose of hardware synths is to be “hands on” , to have all of the expressive tools for dynamic performance. Strange choice of keyboard for such a nice looking synth and not a cheap one…

oh no! No velocity is a really strange choice on such a nice (looking) piece.

glorified computer keyboard there, I wonder if you have the ability to change the (fixed) output velocity (like you do on a computer)?

Oh well, it’s clearly not for me, but I did follow the project up till this point really hoping for an entry point in which I’d be interested and ultimately purchase.
What a ride it’s been!

$1800 and NO velocity or after touch ?? :joy:

This isn’t exactly news is it ? The product was announced over six years ago, and it’s no different now.

But go ahead and knock yourselves out.
