Roto Control (MIDI controller by Melbourne Instruments)

definitely not too bad, now i wonder how the sound will change over a few years of regular use. that was my only hesitation so i will wait a bit before pulling the trigger on one of these. mostly just read that its a drone motor and it will last longer than a regular pot which is fine but the noise thing is more of a concern

I don’t think it has been answered here, but is there any way to access the screen (colour + text) and remotely edit them (via sysex, osc, anything) ?
It would be crucial to me to make it work as I plan with M4L. I really want a dynamic set of controls but the way I want it to work doesn’t work with a Control Surface script in Ableton.
Basically the way I use it (currently with Faderfox EC4) is a set of mapping “presets”, done in the live set level. The presets use the same set of MIDI CCs but their mapping is changed contextually. This is, in practice, and in my opinion, way more usefull/customizable than track or device specific mapping.

Ooh great question! Also interested in that

Just been emailed a link to a beta firmware which fixes this issue.

Yes I got the same - they’re busy this morning (it’s morning for me)
Nice folks

Does it fix the AU mapping bug? I really hope so, as I’m quite committed to AU and I don’t want to have to download the VST versions.

from their support. and yes it does.

" It looks like you have hit an issue with AU plugins. Our engineers have found the problem and it will be fixed in the next firmware update.

In the meantime try out this beta release - it should fix your problem so you can continue using your Roto-Control until the official release is out."

thank you for sharing the link. I’ve been pulling my hair out trying to work out why sometimes mapping was working and othertimes no dice.

Has anyone figured out how to erase recordings in the Motion recorder?
I hit the tape icon key (motion record), tap erase, then touch each knob i want to erase the recording on, and they turn orange.

Then what? I’ve tried pressing erase again, but there’s still motion recorded.
There’s no indication of what to do next, and no mention of it in the quick start guide.

It would be lovely to get a manual for this thing.

I use a Faderfox EC4 currently and realized most Elektron boxes, besides OT, are unable to send midi feedback back to it. In this scenario, wouldn’t this make the motorized faders completely useless?

What do you mean by midi feedback?

I believe as long as there’s a midi out cable connected from the synth / piece of gear and going into the midi in of the roto control, and the knobs send midi cc this will work.

It works with many new and old synths I’ve been testing. I can turn a knob on the synth and it’s reflected on the roto control.

And does RC follow knob positions when you load a new patch?

Just received mine so still figuring it out. Knob positions on the RC follow/jump to positions in Ableton presets and mixer positions. You can scroll through presets on the RC with the arrows and the knobs reflect whatever you scroll to. As long as the knobs and buttons have been learned on the RC. I have Takeover Mode in Ableton set to Pickup. Cool to watch.

I think @mbeltran is referring to OT’s ability to send a « snapshot » of all current values.

Just received my Roto Control and my first thought is… how do I switch it off? Do I really need to physically unplug both USB cables every time I want to turn it off?

I bought this in Sweden, works great.

I don’t think so?

I think the guy at their booth at NAMM demonstrated this with Elektron machines. But I will follow this, because Elektrons are my main machines. RC on it’s way, so I’ll find out soon, I guess.

Support have fixed it for me - they are awesome and very responsive.

I absolutely love this thing. Especially the keyboard style buttons - the buttons were the only thing that attracted me to elektron devices - so glad I resisted and got one of these instead!
