Roli Seaboard Rise

Had my eye on that one since it came out…I think if one considers the expressive possibilities of MPE (pressure per note, vibrato per note, slides & bends per note etc), I think the Linnstrument has the best layout to use these techniques effectively and quickly. Second is the Seaboard in my book, then the Osmose etc.

What I love about the Linnstrument also is that it is self-contained. All its settings are accessible on the hardware without the need for a special software. Considering how expensive these MPE controllers (still) are and how small the companies who make em often are, it’s good to know that I don’t have to rely on the company surviving and supporting the product for me to be able to use the device.

More virtuoso playing by OBLVYN on a Rise 49 !
( SHORT )

She’s flying here in her own dream space, and the Rise allows her to travel where she imagines.

Here’s a Youtube Playlist where a Jason Turk makes interesting traditional Irish music, often with a guest artist. Jason is always playing a Rise 2 in these videos, mostly like you would a standard keyboard, but not always,. He uses the instrument’s capabilities completely, when it is artistically appropriate. Forty two videos so far, all well produced in interesting locales, and scenery. Well done.

Didn’t knew that. Definitely not something I’ll be buying if that’s the case.

It’s like being a criminal that needs to go the police office once a month to make sure you didn’t leave the country.

Has anyone got an E-Mail-Adress from ROLI Luminary HQ? Unfortunately on there website there is no E-Mail-Adress to be found.

I had ordered a Seaboard Rise 2 which was suposed to be delivered today, but was sent back straight away , without a delivery attempt.

Now I would like to initiate a refund. I had a go with there ticket-system, and hope there support-team works better and more professional than there ticket-system.

Problem solved, thank you!

Sound and possibilites are very impressiv, would have been nice and worth a try - very sad .

Here’s an interesting performance on the Rise voiced with Pigments together with an Osmose, played as a duet, with the second performer doing effects on the Hologram Microcosm.

Notice how the Rise and the Osmose are stacked like a dual manual organ. I’ve not seen that done before. Makes sense using each keyboard to its strength in a performance.

I’ve linked a performance by Chris of Implied Music earlier at the top of this post. Real innovator.

Eventually I made a secound attempt and contrary to expectations received the Seaboard Rise 2.

In combination with Equator2 it is a fantastic and very inspiring device with many options and possibilities.

In combination with MPE capabile hardware synths, I have got an audiothingis Micromosta2, Hydrasynth Desktop and Modal Argon8M, it is not worthwhile the money and the effort. It works to a certain extent. So far I have had issues with non supported XY touchpad and touchfaders (all three hw synths), non funktional Preset Browser or only working with limitations (HS, Argon) and non functional glide on the top and bottom of the keywave (MM2).

Very dissapointing. You can work with it and it is great fun with those functions that work, but had I known about those limitations in combination with hardware synths, I would have bought any another hardware controller.

Unfortunaltly the MPE dokumention on all devices ist very poor, and there is not much information too be found on the world wide web.

To be fair, Hydrasynth works wonderfully with Linnstrument. Presets need to be adapted in the mod matrix to accomodate for any MPE dimensions other than pitch.

So I heard. I had thought of getting a Linnstrument in the beginning but then decided on the Seaboard Rise 2. With the knowledge I have got today I would have chosen the Linnstrument.

I am surprised to read that Rise 2 would not play well with Hydrasynth. The latter can be configured to do almost everything MPE.

You can play an make music with the setup. It’s just that I cannot get certain functions to work.

If anyone has the setup Roli Seaboard Rise2 and Hydrasynth (Deskop) and has got it working fully functional, am I am eager to learn, how to set it up. So everybode I have been in contact with tells me RSbR2 should work in any hardware-settup - but so far nobody was able to explain how to, lacking of the names items.

Does Rise 2’s docs come with a MIDI implementation chart? If yes, there you would find the relevant cc numbers for everything that’s exposed via MIDI.

I wouldn’t give up on using your Rise with the Hydrasynth. If the Rise can be mapped to all of the MPE dimensions of Equator 2, it should be able to be mapped to all the mod capabilities of the Hydrasynth. This is fairly easy to do with Linnstrument and Push 3’s MPE capabilities on the Hydrasynth, so I would guess it can be done on the Rise too. I am looking forward to using my Osmose with the Hydrasynth, Cobalt, and Iridium at some point when I get my studio back up and running.

Unfortunatly there is no MIDI implementation chart to be found for Roli Seaboard Rise2 o Roli Equator2, which would make thinks a lot easier. But the dokumentation on Roli devices is rather poor.

MIDI mode:

  • The three Touch Faders send MIDI CC messages, assignable using ROLI Dashboard, which can be used to control synth parameters in Equator2 or other instruments/effects.

In both Expression Mode and MIDI Mode, the XY touch pad controls the X and Y macro parameters in Equator2 and ROLI Studio Player. These macro parameters are preconfigured to change the synth preset in a creatively interesting way.

Perhaps use a MIDI monitor tool to find out what cc’s the xy touch pad and faders send ? Hydrasynth does allow you to assign cc’s to control its macro knobs btw, via its mod matrix.

For MPE dimensions, check HS’s mod matrix sources: MPE-Z, MPE-Yabs (or Yrel if you wish), MPE-Z, Velo On, Velo Off.
MPE-X is assigned by default to pitch and MPE-Z is internally mapped to polyAT. For X you may have to align both devices’ pitch bend range (see voice parameters page 2). I think HS is 24 semitones max. So if your Roli was set to 48 semitones, you would have to reduce Rise’s bend range to 24.

As already writen, they work together, but there is a limited funktionality.

I don’t know how it works on the Linnstrument and Push 3, but there is a tool called Roli Dashboard to configure the Seaboard Rise 2, but it seems to have its limitations:

Set dashboard’s pitch bend range to 24, then HS’s pitch will respond correctly without further ado. Use MPE-Yabs or cc74 as mod source on the HS to respond to Rise’s vertical slide - you’ll have to define the destination yourself. I’d advise you to use HS macro knobs as destination. For the touch pad and faders, use a MIDI monitoring tool to get those cc numbers - they are probably fixed and can’t be changed within the dashboard app.

MPE / 5 Dimensions / 5D Touch

Strike → HS Velo On

  • Technically speaking this refers to note-on velocity MIDI message

Press → HS MPE-Z

  • Technically speaking this refers to polyphonic aftertouch or channel pressure MIDI message

Glide → HS MPE-X

  • Technically speaking this refers MIDI pitch bend value on a given MIDI channel

Slide → HS MPE-Yabs (or MPE-Yrel if the Rise supports it)

  • Technically speaking this refers to Y-axis input from the RISE, inputted as MIDI Control Change Message (CC 74 by default — configurable using ROLI Dashboard)

Lift → HS Velo off

  • Technically speaking this refers to note-off velocity MIDI message

One note on Hydrasynth presets: many of them have polyAT assigned to a filter or amp LFO. Oftentimes, this is pointless with MPE because your finger pressure can introduce such movement naturally. In the mod matrix you would have to delete the corresponding polyAT source to LFO dest slot. MPE-Z is more useful to adjust sound volume and brightness directly without LFO and perhaps at the same time (2 slots needed). But of course, use anything you like
