I’m curious; is anyone else contemplating returning their TR1000??
Just me?

For those of you sequencing the device with an external sequencer and running into issues, from what I can discern, the midi notes/numbers in the settings do not correspond exactly to what you may need to assign to the instrument in your sequencer.
I prefer to use Cirklon as the master clock and slave the drum machine to ensure super tight timing; at least until I decide on a ACME Snd-4 or Multiclock to run it in standalone. I know the Cirklon fairly well, so it was absolutely necessary for me to justify the investment, and overall lets me get up to speed with the features more swiftly without having to figure out how the sequencer works
After hours of trial and error, I got the tip from Starksy’s Youtube video after almost having given up for the night. Check it out here.
I figured this out by basically looping a row of trigs to the Cirklon, with all but the instrument I’m attempting to define muted, until the sound was triggered on the sequencer.
From there, I assigned the default note / number in the instrument definition, which is what’s played anytime I add a step.
I created a new instrument definition for each drum sound on the TR1000, as the multi-instrument approach didn’t render results.
I assume it may work the same way with Elektron or something like an OxiOne.
Once I test this out, I’ll be adding the instrument definition to the Cirklon Sequentix forum for others who may want to use P3 patterns.
Hope helps anyone who struggled with a similar use case.
I was until I figured out how to get my sequencer to slave it. Now I need to let the Alpha Base and Digitakt II go. Love the boxes, but it’s redundant to keep them.
Not I.
I’m loving how it sounds and enjoying the workflow for the most part.
I’m OK with using it as clock master for now; I’m assuming they’ll sort this in relatively short order.
But I don’t intend to gig with mine; purely a studio tool for me. So “gap gate” doesn’t affect me.
To be honest, I’m not noticing the gaps when I’m switching around the demo patterns / kits that came with the instrument. But again, that’s not the sort of thing I’m critically evaluating.
Yeah, that’s not a myth. It requires you to slave it entirely with sequencing duties to another box or pull the trigger on something like an ERM, SyncGen, or ACME Snd-4. Neither of them are cheap, but from all the folk who are using it with other instruments, all of them are using a master clock to adjust the delay.
I have a studio full of gear and I buy and sell all the time (for example, had every Elektron box over time, just down to 2 now)
The TR-1000 is one bit of kit I will never part with. Its the definitive drum machine for me, the real thing, sort of ends the journey from when I first wanted (and couldn’t afford) and 808.
It’s when it has to play nice with other hardware that it becomes incredibly obvious. At least if it’s not owning the clock duties. Even my SH-101 sounded ‘off’ as the drums lagged behind the notes. Timing is maybe my biggest peeve when it comes to playing tunes.
They have to sort the entire midi issues, like the mis-labeled or coded notes in the box. They clearly didn’t intend to prioritize external connectivity with this machine. But I can’t imagine any professional producer or performer not annoyed by where things are this very moment. There’d be no way of feeling confident without a ton of upfront labor or trade-offs to feel good about the investment.
If you use an external sequencer, check my mention in the thread. But it requires fully giving note sequencing duties over to an external sequencer if you want the timing not to sound ‘off.’ OR have something like a master clock that let’s you adjust the delay of all gear connected to it.
Agreed re: sync and MIDI issues. I’m hoping / assuming we’ll see some improvements for that soon.
In my limited testing, I’m finding sync is fine when using it as master.
I also have a central MIDI clock device (JKM ClockStep:Multi) that I’ll be testing with it this weekend.
Yeah, to be honest, I’m not expecting it to be perfect. And am in some ways ‘waiting’ for something like this to happen after a few days with it. Hope you don’t feel dismayed by it. And I hope they’re on top of the firmware during most of our buyer’s remorse.
As long as you save a copy of the kit, it should maintain the settings. As I understand it, you’d be overwriting it if you don’t change the name in some way or fasion.
What’s your take on the sound of the AB compared to the 1000?
When you say ‘AB’ mind clarifying?
Alphabase?
Oomph. That’s a tough one, man. I’ll put it like this: I can get the AlphaBase kick out of the TR1000. But I can’t get the range of what the TR1000 does from the AlphaBase.
Because you can easily layer the kick instrument with say a 707, you can get the dry top end that is really hard to get from the AlphaBase. Add a 808 to it, and you get a low end that you can’t get from the AlphaBase without having two drum tracks likely laid down separately.
So the sonic range of the TR1000 is pretty much unrivaled.
The effects are sonically more pleasing to my ears; even more so than Elektron.
I hope people will mention this more, but the high and low pass filter are performance or studio recording grade. Smooth as butter.
When using the Alphabase, I pretty much used four voices and covered the rest by the Rytm: congos, shakers, etc. were just much easier to access on Elektron given the menu and overall usability.
As others have stated on other forums, the Rytm’s kick doesn’t quiet cut like the AlphaBase.
This is particularly why I’ll be using the TR1000 for all of my drums in the future, as well as layering samples and using the stock sounds. They are so insanely good and there are hundreds, if not, up to a thousand to choose from.
I’ll hold on to the Rytm for performance and to have a nice mobile box, with drums I sample from the TR1000. But the AlphaBase will go up for sale once I sample it for my library.
Thanks for asking.

I’m having the exact same issue - mine freezes just while scrolling through samples, making it impossible to work every time. Also power switch doesn’t respond at all, and I have to unplug the unit to turn it off. Is there any official channel to report this problem to Roland?
I’ll buy it from you, send me a DM.
Bro, you must be cookin’ up.
I can’t lie, this would irk the sh*t of me. But I can’t imagine this will be something that lasts for too long after an update or two. But yeah, I understand anyone’s frustration with something that costs this much.
Savage and relatable response. Ha.
