The point is people were literally physically circuit bending the machines and they replicated those same modifications in the design. It’s descriptive.
I guess strictly speaking circuit bending was always ‘after market’. Eg anything a manufacturer implements is a feature not a circuit bend!
But it’s descriptive of what’s actually been done - a deviation from the ‘normal’ or ‘intended’ or ‘planned’ design and hey, words/phrases evolve.
If you look up circuit bent 808 there was some kind of academic paper published in 2014 about physical modelling of a circuit bent 808 circuit, so maybe Roland actually referenced that. It does mention the concept of “voltage starve” which is probably fair to call “circuit bending” since it’s doing something “wrong” to the circuit vs more normal mods like adding new functions.

What’s the process for creating melodies? Do you put the triggers into the sequencer first and then hold each trigger while moving the pitch knob for each step? Or do you do this with the screen and it’s 6 knobs?
That sucks about it freezing while scrolling through samples. I’ve heard of a lot of people reporting the machine freezing, so I’m sure Roland is already working on it.

It’s clunky and I’d like to figure out a smoother way. Some people use snapshots, but I just wish they had a multipitch mode like my SP1200 does. A much simpler machine, but I really miss that. I am not a fan of the snapshots for melodies so far, because if you map Coarse tune to the knob, you can’t even see the steps it is moving in, it just shows a % number. I may be missing something there, but one of my few complaints is how to play in pitches.
That’s too bad. I think Roland don’t intend people to make melodies with it, if there’s no easy way to do it. They did specifically say it’s just a rhythm machine, but I think a few of us were hoping we could get easy melodies out of it as a bonus. Oh well, maybe they’ll add an easier way in an update if people email them enough.
Yah, I mean the SP1200 is a drum sampler and you can do it on there. I am putting the request in, it’s really a no brainer to add this (I hope).
Another thing I don’t like is naming each sample I record in. Wish it did auto names.
Love the machine, I am just putting out things I’d like to see added.
The Auto naming for sampling would be a big win. Naming patches and samples is a pet peeve of mine. It takes forever and is meaningless. Hope you put in a request for that too.
I’m making a list of things I also want to see, so I’ll try to remember to send them a request as well once I find out more of how the TR-1000 works.
I’m not finding a feature request form on their website though. I’ll have to look again.
The weird thing is, Roland HAD to have heard everyone with a TR-8S complaining for years about how awkward it is to enter any melodies. For that reason, I have to think it’s absolutely an intentional choice by them and I don’t see it changing
Hope I’m wrong though!
We can’t do it with an external keyboard either right?
New here, trying to wade through all the comments. Anyone point me in the right direction on getting the tr1000 to sync properly with Logic. Been a nightmare today. Getting frustrated. Updated the firmware. Trying the dig tightness modes. Would love any pointers if it’s not too annoying. ![]()
Welcome!
You’ll find more useful info and responses in the Roland TR-1000 user thread.
This is mostly the daffing about and pontificating about why you do or don’t like the TR-1000 thread…
And we’re damn proud of it!
Ah ok thanks. Well. I love the tr1000. That’s my 2 cents. It’s insane. But I don’t love getting the syncing right.
Exactly. And do you know what’s weirder, their own tiny T-8 that costs a fraction of the this has chromatic playing and a built in 303 with ACB…. So wait… isn’t that a drum machine a well?
It’s interesting everyone seems to swallow and repeat the marketing mantra of ”this is not a groovebox”
So why does it have things like stem playback and sample chopping and sidechain? And why do they perform full tracks in every demo?
Even if it was a pure drum machine you want to be able to play drum pitches live. It’s not a new thing…
