Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 1)

I prefer the OP workflow to the SP, and wish the SP had loop sampling…

Is anyone here using Mk2 whit Octatrack? I’v beeen looking for a long time for some kind of lofi FX unit, wandering how does it play with other samplers (OT)

Good to know.

The mk2 is so much better in a lot of ways… I used the 303 a lot too, and the mk2 is lightning fast in comparison. The extra features basically solve every issue I had with the old ones.

Maybe I just need to use it more until the old:
‘Resample-rec, press empty pad, rec, play pads’ button combination is out of my system :joy:

Has freezing been an issue with your unit? Mine hasn’t since I removed the midi cable coming from the rytm, but before that the sp had regular moments where it kept playing the same pad, not responding to any buttons anymore, and not responding to the on/off button either… If the midi was causing this I could check if I can change some of the settings on the Rytm.

Just got contacted. My unit is scheduled to arrive at the shop I ordered from by December 28, so it’s looking like I might be able to get it before the end of the year! Woo hoo!

I hear you man, I’d say give this thing a chance for what it is. It’s my first own SP404 and I’m using it exactly the way you’ve described — quick, playful, resample, jam out, move on.

So probably there’s a bit of switching cost involved for you, given your proficiency on older SP404s. I felt the same when I got an MPC Live after having been with the MPC1000 w JJOSXL for some time, at first everything seemed off to me on the Live, with time though the new became the new old.

That said, the SP404mk2 does have a few bugs and quirks that I hope will be ironed out ASAP. There are also UI irregularities here and there, which I hope will also be sorted with time (the SP404 subreddit has a bug reporting & feature request thread with a well organised document/list of current bugs/issues).

But to me, it’s exactly that fast, musical instrument that you make the older SP404s out to be and I’m enjoying it a lot. Reading you though, makes me wanna pick up an OG or SX on Ebay just to see

Does midi-out also supports velocity?

Oh nice thanks! I was making a pattern last night after too much wine and a long day. And I basically made a kick but for some reason another sound I was messing with got recorded as well. And then I tried to delete that sound from triggering and just deleted the sound itself…loll. So something like this will help a lot I think.

Thats good advice, did another beat on the mk2 today, no crashes!

I wouldn’t try an older sp after this one though if I were you haha, it will be frustrating as hell with all the limitations.

I’m still wating for the mkII to arrive at my door even though i haven’t ordered one yet. But i’m not giving up hope that one of my neighbours has ordered one and it will be delivered to me instead. I know it would be mean but i blame it on Roland. They started it with all the aggressive promotion that i can’t resist.

I can‘t find the bug reporting thread not the feature request thread. Can you help me? Thx

Got mk2 and the only thing I miss so far is a proper manual in pdf. Is it possible to assign individual pads to effect bus? I dont even understand how efx busses work. Sampling from iphone is cool!

To assign a pad to Bus2, press Bus Fx button and select the Bus2, press Remain button + Pad n. Bus2 pads will turn green.

Download the manual from Roland

Thank you,will try that.

How. Only View is available

Youtube manual linked above is the best way. It is indexed so you can find what you need. Its a lot better than the manual. Gotten me where I wanted a lot faster.
