Roland SP-404 Mk2 (Part 1)

I put my name on the waiting list. Looks like it is a couple months out. Beats paying black market prices on Amazon.

Sample import on the 404 MK II is a nightmare (right now), especially if you have sub folders, really glad this Editor exists and after importing lots of samples in no time without problems this thing will be needed regularly in the future.

Thanks- yeah, I’d eventually got the hang of that (although working out that you have to find the right octave within the track took a while…), but it’s sending it back to the OP-Z that seems odd- ends up on channel/Track 5 regardless…

I tried connecting the OP-Z to the SP. OP-Z can easily sequence the SP and seems to be a good alternative to the SP’s pattern sequencer. You can resample the OP-Z pattern to the SP pad using the Sample mode instead of the Resample.

I hope they make it possible to define the sample source for sampling and resampling.

Maybe we should make a wishlist thread?
Andre.

I thought about that, like, I unplug the microphone when I want to sample from the iPAd to avoid hearing my cough

Thanks for the info. That would be a little weird if I got bumped. I haven’t seen anything in the junk folder and in fact, the rep sent an email saying I was still slated for a January delivery.

Yes, I wouldn’t even bother putting samples on the SD card. I went straight to the software editor and it’s really easy and fast to use. You can also just pull samples from the pads to your computer for backups or importing them to your favorite daw.

Thanks to the fantastic @Oish (and for once, ParcelForce), I have one of these to play with over Christmas!

rubberised knobs mate hand bounces straight off. Playing the electric bongo

@subduct still surprises me how dark these units seem to be compared to the stock photos. It’s practically black

Just thought about a little hack for my own problem:
Say there’s a drum loop on pad 1 and you want to use this as a time keeper to resample some chops (pad 2-8) to a new pad by playing them live. If you’ve got a second set of speakers or headphones, send pad 1 through the cue out. This removes it from the main mix, so you can freely resample anything without having the drum loop from pad 1 baked into the new sample.
On a similar note, if you want to resample something using the vocoder, amp sims or autotune, you can use the cue out and route it back through the inputs.
I haven’t tested this yet, but it should work as expected.

Edit: I finally got around to testing this after the Christmas shenanigans. I’m sorry to report that it’s not working. The cue function is very basic. You can only monitor one sample at a time via the headphone outs. No other functions (sampling, resampling, playing samples through the main outs) are available while in cue mode. Bummer.

yeah for sure, makes a slick contrast with the oled. Have fun man!

Got mine. I think my first move will be to run some synths through it and learn the different effects. Try and make some crazy sounding stabs, pads and chords.

I’ve used the sp some more this week, and I gotta say: I’m not as sure I love this machine as I was before getting it… Not trying to bring down all you guys’ excitement, but I think it’s fair to share some doubts. They might be completely gone again in a week, who knows.

  • Compared to the older models this one feels a bit frail in its basic operation, by lack of a better word. The old ones always felt solid as a rock whatever you did with them. The mk2 seems to react slower on recording/deleting than the sx, and feels less intuitive somehow. It might be partly because of the ‘operation complete’ screen which shows up after doing something and stays up for a while, but, confusingly, at first you can’t do anything while the screen is up, but after a while you can, causing me to try and fail to do something else after recording often.
  • I lose track of which page i’m on sometimes: of you open the start/end point page and then add fx, the knobs will control the start/end point instead of the fx parameters. You have to go back to the start/endpoint page and exit that first before being able to edit the fx.
  • The machine crashed on me a couple of times, in which cases the power button stopped working and I had to unplug. This might’ve been caused by my rytm sending midi to it, but this shouldn’t happen, and makes it feel a bit unreliable.
  • As I said before, the chopping, envelope, mute groups etc work great and are very well thought out. It makes working on the machine very fast. I love this.
  • The numbers on the screen make me look at the numbers instead of the knobs, which is a shame.
  • There are a LOT of options to be explored. On the one hand, this is great. On the other, it feels way less streamlined than before.

I might still learn to really love this machine in the coming days, but it has not been as easy as I thought it would be. The lesson this taught me is that more options really does not necessarily equal better. I thought I knew this before, but somehow I fell for the raving reviews and great sounding features and completely lost my critical stance on buying new gear…

Edit: to be clear, I really respect roland for making the mk2 and adding all these user requested features. This machine certainly has it’s place, and if I keep complaining maybe I should just go back to the sx/a which is also still part of their product range :joy:

I didn’t spend as much time on my a/sx as I did on my 303 for producing so the mk2 for me is a gift for the gods just for the fact that it pitches samples  and is way faster than the 303. I haven’t touched Ableton or my MPC1k or One or OP-1 since I got it. Still scratching the surface but such Fun machine. Like OP-1 fun!

Damn, I dont think I have the right USB cable for this machine. Probably won’t be able to track down a usb c to usb A sync cable for a few days.

I believe I can update with an SDCard reader though, so I will try that.

EDIt - it worked. I am slowly figuring this thing out. It’s great, but I get lost at some spots.

Who has made a really good YT walkthru on this box with the updated firmware? I am going through the manual but its not exactly the most detailed.

Official one is pretty thorough, but the default samples get old haha

The official app mentioned earlier in the thread is a great companion to get started too!

I’m glad I passed mine onto you. Really pleased you’ve made good use of it but with the talk/ comparisons to the Op-1 workflow I’m seriously thinking of ordering another.
