Found it at 179e at my local dealer, can’t resist.
I held good with the Volcas and T-8, but this one is hard to pass at this price :star_struck:

And I said my wife no more synths…

Where?

DinSync’s RE-101 replica is almost ready and we also have Michigan SynthWorks’ CMU-810 clone which is basically the 202 plus noise gen. We really are spoiled lol

The waveshaping features on this are very unexpected and very very cool. I was thinking about getting an SH-01a but as a longtime Shruthi/Ambika lover I am an absolute sucker for weird wavetably waveforms going through Rolandy filters. It would be incredible if they could do a firmware update on the SH-01a that gives it Draw and Chop though cause I do want that classic 101 front panel :sob:

Trigger input on the SH01A is a big feature for me. So is the 100 step 101 sequencer.

I also much prefer sliders over pots for the 101.

I just got an SH01A back after selling it a few months ago to fund another purchase. Won’t be selling it again.

Imo the SH 101 doesn’t need presets. SH 01a is the only synth where I never use presets since it’s so hands on and easy to dial in patches on the fly.

Great that Roland expands the minis series and now adds more controls. 101 is a slider machine for me though and it’s interface is inspiring. So I‘ll stick with the 01a. If only it had some effects, mainly a delay.

Fun. Easy buy

This, a J-6 and a battery-powered DT would be a hell of a ultra-compact live setup.

Ok, the Loopop and Jorb videos have squashed all my doubts. It seems like Roland knocked this one out of the park! Ordered.

plus MC-101/107, right?

and probably any other zen-core capable synth  but thats a big list.

I almost impulse bought an S-1 just now, but remembered that I’m also considering an MC-101 already, and that’s a multitimbral chameleon that can probably cover SH-101 territory nearly as well, with fewer dedicated controls of course.

If i get an S-1 it’ll just be for battery powered jams alongside my T-8 and Oxi One

but yeah in general, presets, automation, and midi CC are very unexpected QoL additions i would not have expected to hit the Rolca line.

really hope these are added to the T-8 too…

Maybe. They are slightly different beasts IMO, they approximate the 101 sound, in the same way any mono subtractive synth mostly does (and the SH-4D is in this camp)
Rather than trying to actively “be” a 101

There’s a lot here I wasn’t expecting on a Rolca.
The chop and draw modes, multiple effect types with parameters (e.g. hall/room/spring reverbs), the arp, and of course the MIDI CC.

Did some product manager sneak this one past the Roland “must have a downside” police?

Can you do automations on the SH01A like on the S-1?

Does the SH01A sequencer has 64 steps like the S-1? probabilities / ratchet on the SH01A?

I’ll wait for the boutique version.

Lol I had the same thought. With this and the SH-4d I’ve thought “ok they’ve clearly got some new people behind the scenes now”

Agreed. If this is a sign of things to come, I’m extremely excited to see what Roland continues to put out.

Part of me feels a bit silly for ordering this since I also have the 4d, but this (rightfully) sounds so much better at 101 stuff in the YT demos. I’m pretty sure the 4d’s 101/juno modes are just a fancy UI while using the 4d synth engine, though I don’t know if I’ve seen anyone confirm this.

From what I can tell it’s just an emulation of the 101 oscillator section, which is just a CEM3340 VCO. Kind of silly for them to specifically call it a 101 model in the unit when it has no other aspect of the 101 and the 3340 is the VCO for tons of other synths.
