Roland S-1 Tweak Synth

I just got a Shik N32B and now trying to figure out what would be the best CC-values do assign to it. Anyone got a good idea?

If you don’t know about the N32B its a controller with 32 assignable knobs for CC values.

I don’t actually like couches. I tend to work and tweak at the dining table, or another table or desk. My partner colonizes the couch, usually, but she is on a work trip (so her work stuff is not on it). Thought I’d see what the fuss was about. I stretched out, put the S-1 vertically on my chest, and tweaked away, occasionally changing the arpeggiator source. Had never played a synth supine before. I don’t know that I’ll make a habit of it, but it was kind of fun.

I like bad gears channel, I just see his reviews as a bit of humour.

He’s a guest on Sonictalk next week, that’ll be interesting.

One of my favorite things is sitting with my kids on the sofa and playing a small synth like this one while they’re watching an animation or playing a game.

This thing is perfection. Everything I want to do is right there. Love chop, love the gyroscope.

Am I correct that there are no presets? I looked for five minutes for the button to bring them up, then I forgot about it.

I need to read the manual, I guess, but it was so satisfying not to bother. I would love some of their other synthesis models in this form factor, with everything so close at hand.

the presets are saved to the patterns, so each pattern could be a preset. you save with shift+write

Thank you! I might just pretend I didn’t read that

Yeah, I love that little MANUAL button so it doesn’t jump when you change parameters. That way I can treat the knob positions as they appear.
Haven’t really dug around in the presets yet. It’s too easy to make neat sounds on!

Has anyone really messed with the draw & chop setting for stuff that isn’t metallic sounding?

If you simply enter the draw slope mode without making any other changes, you will have a nice triangle wave.

Hadn’t even noticed it there, fantastic

For another trick, try holding the shift button as you turn the square or sub oscillators!

Actually, it seems many knobs have shortcuts like that.
Holding shift while turning the filter section envelope knob adjusts the key tracking.
Doing the same with the noise oscillator knob lets you quickly change from pink or white noise.
Neat!

There’s a table of them on page 70 of the manual (you probably know that, but putting it here for future readers).

I’ll be honest I’ve been mostly winging it since the first day!
Haven’t checked much since.

Thank you! I’ll have to dig in again.

Another good one to know (which isn’t super clear in the manual, imo) is if you hold the Step or Pattern button down and twist a knob it will show you the parameter’s value without changing it. Useful for making minor tweaks when you load up a finished patch and all the knobs are in random spots and you don’t remember what everything was set to.

This is a lifesaver, awesome!

This is also shoehorned into the table on page 70 (and is new in firmware 1.02).

Anyone mapped an external midi controller to their S-1 yet? What are the most fun/performative controls to map?

Thinking of picking up an S-1 and mapping my Arturia Minilab 3 to it but overwhelmed by the very extensive midi cc implementation options:)

Who’s got good ideas for eight knobs and 4 faders?

Someone made a vst / editor

And some patches with it
