Yeah 101 sequencer is hit load, hit some notes and rests and ties, hit play, don’t like? Repeat process until do. Also with trig in you need not think about step length, you can place triggers on drum machine or whatever and it will play each note in turn with the trigs.
Is there an idea how “long” the trigs are in the 101 sequencer? Like, if you play 16th with the sequencer and have the osc to open with trigs, are there pauses between the notes?
No pauses unless you put a rest, which will last for the same duration as a note entered.
Also depends on the envelope settings, you can have notes flowing into each other with a long release and the portamento on or you can dial everything back and just have a tight decay for nice percussive bloops.
I’m not too sure what the actual duty cycle/trig length on the original sh101 is though, at a guess it must be most of a step right otherwise the attack and sustain parts of the envelope wouldn’t have any effect?
Yeah this is a lovely feature of the 101/sh01a, I had a cursory try of this with the S-1 the other week with my modular but it wasn’t really super happy with it. I have been meaning to try it with different sync resolutions from the menu but haven’t quite got round to it yet.
I think if you set sync clock in menu to 1 it should work, in theory, but not sure if rests/ties would confuse it.
I meant, when the OSC is set to open according to trigger, and not envelope. You input 16th in the sequencer. Do you hear Ta-Ta-Ta-Ta or Taaaaaaa? The former would mean that the sequencer outputs triggers that aren’t the length of the whole step but a bit shorter (which I would expect)
The default duty cycle is 80%. But you can p-lock each note with its own value. 100% gives a tie. (Edit: this is for the S-1, I have no idea about the original SH-101.)
Thanks. I was curious about the SH-101 actually.
This isn’t how it works, the trigger will always trigger the envelope which opens the VCA (and filter if set) allowing the oscillator to sound. So a trigger received whilst the envelope is still active will initiate a restart to the attack phase, unless legato is active in which case it will continue without re-triggering from the attack phase.
Thanks. I understand that. What I was asking is when the VCA is configured to not be trigger by the envelope, but by the length of a trig.
Oh, if you have the VCA set to gate and you send a trigger, the VCA will only remain open for the length of the trigger.
I know that too. Sorry I’m quite unclear as it seems.
My question from the start is, while the VCA is on Gate, if you input 16th notes in the SH-101 sequencer, does the sequencer output triggers that are the full 16th so you don’t hear separation between notes, or does it output shorter triggers so that you hear distinct notes.
Hope I’m writing English :). Sorry about the confusion.
Edit: confused Gate and Trigger, doesn’t help
Found some videos with the SH-101 original sequencer, all good.
I’ve just received Thonk knobs, they are great! Will be good to see the position of the knob better. My big hands can still move parameters easily, no bumping in others.
They are indeed a bit tall. I may try to cut them. Any tip for doing a not-too-bad job? What I have is this type of tool:
I wonder how to cut them the same length, at least close to.
Might be difficult with a craft knife, I used a Dremel rotary tool with a cutting wheel, held knobs in a washing line clothes peg, came out fine, I used a stand to hold the Dremel at the correct height.
That is a very neat and organised setup … presumably you just add headphones to that and you’re good to go ?
Interested to know how you came by the white support thingy, and how it might apply to other gear. Was it some standard sized thing that just happened to fit these devices ?
Thanks, yes just add headphones or small speaker and good to go, all synced and mixed/daisy chained, for the holder I just used a piece of ducting that happened to be the right size to hold them, cut to length, then split it longways, made some cut outs at the back for USB, power switch and midi connectors. This is the kind of ducting, cost less than £10
Here is the back view
It makes using them together in a portable scenario much easier, as there is no concern about cabling or keeping them still, it fits nice on the lap too.
I plan on using these, Circuit Rhytm, OP1 and 1010 Bluebox as a mini studio for when I just want to jam/record without going into my main setup and using off grid power (just use a USB battery pack for Bluebox) using a IKEA Eneby speaker for monitoring.
That’s what I was afraid of not necessarily applicable other gear (M:S + M:C in my case). Thanks for the info.
That’s the appeal.
Maybe try 180mm ducting
Pretty easy to cut and file.
Just thought, could use top piece to make cover/decksaver too.
got one of these bad boys the other day and it really is exactly what i wanted out of a synth. been messing around with more complex things like the digitone and hydrasynth and while they were fun and i made cool tunes with them, it just felt like too much tinkering. this is so immediate, i love it. additionally, i never knew how much i would like having easy access to a synced riser.
perfect pair for the M8 too, im just using the M8 as a speaker and sampler while sitting on the couch twiddlin knobs and making sequences. its ideal for me for sure.
made this one on the M8 by sampling a few synth lines and ran it through the sp404, another perfect pair. im having a ball
