Roland S-1 Tweak Synth

If it’s anything like the MC-101, you have about a minute left till automatic shutdown at that point.

Of course, I have no idea If it’s anything like the MC-101.

Really loving the Befaco knobs posted earlier in the thread

And still think this thing sounds amazing past the “honeymoon phase”. What an incredible little synth

Same, I have a blast with it, after more than a week. I’m preparing some material to play a live gig in the summer and it’s perfect for me, sequenced with m8, love it.

I want to order some of those knobs as well!

am i an idiot who doesnt understand ts/trs or is there a reason why, when running the S-1 into my mixer channel via a 3.5mm adapter to a 1/4" trs cable, i have to pull it out slightly for the audio signal to transmit properly?

should i be using Ts to 3.5mm adapter? does that matter?

if i push it into the “out” port entirely, i just hear the tail of the reverb, and only if i crank the reverb level

Apologies if it’s been asked / verified above, I couldn’t find it.

Can anyone tell me if the S-1 is able to load SH-01A patches? I’ve asked Roland but they haven’t responded.
I have attached a saved preset and if anyone’s is up for testing it would be highly appreciated.

SH01A_PATCH1_01.PRM (566 Bytes)

No, it does not have any facility for loading patches, however as I mentioned earlier in the thread it is mostly CC compatible, the only difference being it has a few extra parameters for chop, draw etc.

Ah thanks, that’s a bummer.

A shame they didn’t think to do this, they might if enough users ask for it. I think the D-05 and JD-08 have patch compatibility with their vintage counterparts over sysex.

Not sure but instinctively I’d say a 3,5mm TRS to two TS jacks (did I understand well that you want to split left/right in your mixer?

Manual (v1.02 page 63) says you’re able to backup and restore patches just like the SH01A does.

im currently just running it into one mono channel of the mixer. i guess thats the problem? should probably use a dual trs to 3.5mm. thank you

is there a good way to get just the mono signal out of that port?

It backs up patch+pattern combined as a .PRM file (like 01a) but they don’t seem to be compatible, I tried your patch, renamed it to S-1 format, it accepted it but upon loading it was just the init patch.

Ah thanks for trying! Too bad this doesn’t work tho!

It might be possible for a bit of hacking to convert the files, but that is above my intelligence level

Here are the SH01A and S-1 patch files side by side (S-1 also has lots more key/values & the sequence data is also further down in the file)

full init file, just open with a text editor of choice:
S1_PTN4-16.PRM (48.1 KB)

Nice that they used a readable text format. It shouldn’t be hard to write a script to convert either way.

Indeed…. If I had either device I might have a go at, definitely if I owned both.

Good detective work @kryten42 :+1:

So looks to be a just case of changing file name, changing case, adding/removing some data.

Interesting, but also, it’s a one osc/envelope/filter synth, it doesn’t take that long to just make/remake a patch on right?

I’m finding a bit of cognitive dissonance with having the voices saved with the patterns just now but I think that’s just me thinking about the sequence rather than the voice as being the thing we’re choosing where really it’s both.

Not quite worked out the best way to swap sequences/voices yet but there’s some cryptic manual/shortcut stuff I’ve not quite got round to mooshing into my brain yet.
