Roland P6 Aira Compact sampler

Great little portable polyphonic sampler. Just what i miss in my setup.

Is there a release date?

Wow this thing also has “trig conditions”! Is it a first for a Roland device?

You can also sequence a sample polyphonically. Even a digitakt can’t do that.

On paper this seems like remarkable feature/value ratio. I haven’t owned any of these tiny aira compact devices but I’d be tempted if it’s similar price to the others. In terms of the relative cost of this particular hobby, it’s almost pocket money prices.

I edited my post but I found a paragraph on resampling on the Roland site for the P-6.

And the more I look at this, the more I like it… the price isn’t bad and it’s already shipping at Sweetwater…

Price is $220

The granular + ability to sample at lower bit rates could do some heavenly things. Not a bad pairing with the S-1 either.

For the price looks ok, 48 shared samples across all patterns seems the main buzzkill, yeah they can be slices so for example you could have kits in some of the slots, but bit fiddly. The backup/restart 9 times for whole memory seems odd, hopefully they will refine that.

I’ll probably get a used one once the inevitable hype dies down, I like the Aira mini format, don’t even mind the 7 seg display personally, at least they don’t die in a few years like Oled.

That and remembering the letter/number combos for a sample. Those two things are what would stop me from buying one.

I know that samples with no names works for some people (else why are pocket operators so popular) but not for me.

granular, 16 note polyphony, resampling. i think this is one of the nicer small sampler options. especially consider how much i love the S-1

actually, considering how esoteric the param text on the led screen is on the S-1, i can see that screen being a pain in the ass for sampling with and saving/naming samples. still very cool though

@6:10 the grain visualization on the step buttons is a nice feature:

Bruh… at first sight this looks so freaking smart. Step sampling is :chefskiss

This can sample through its usb-c from phone / laptop etc? right? It’s what the Andertons Roland demo guy shows. He showed ratcheting and probability locks on sequencer steps, but no mention of conditional lock, unless i missed that.

There is no “conditional lock”, it’s conditional trig and it’s in the probability menu.

nice demo of resampling:

If this is close to the same price as the other Aria compacts I will grab one for sure perfect for traveling.

A proper display would’ve made menu diving into hidden features and sample management a whole lot easier. Guess there are some good uses for it. Too bad the sample memory is extremely limited. Some FX sounded nice.

OK, I’ve been wanting some sort of portable solution to programme drum beats and record parameter automation to pair with my OP-1F as that’s the area I find it most lacking. Given how well my J-6 works with the OP-1F I think this might just be the right device for me. The two together should be a great on the road workflow.

UK: Pre-order available from Andertons at £189. So the highest priced compact so far. It’s enough to make me think about it for a while.

An advantage over the others is that it processes the audio input unlike the other Airas which just pass it through as a passive mixer.

Hopefully you can apply some kind of limiter effect which would make it a great end of chain box.

Questions:

Is it 3 secs stereo sampling @44 for each of the 48 samples? So 144 secs total roughly?

Can you mix sample rates in one song?

Can you mix mono and stereo?

I would expect the 404 gets the filter and even elope per sample and global reverb and delay …. In my dreams.

This looks good.

it’s 3 seconds stereo per sample of course at 44,1kHz (so 3 * 48 at 44,1kHz) . And you can mix match sampling frequencies, it just affects how the audio input is sampled. 3 seconds in total would be a non started.

I wonder if this means the audio input and the internal mic is also passed over usb-c. Could make for a nice soundcard option for an iPad.
