Roland JX-08 & JD-08

Talking about fx slots.

Can you use all 17 at the same time ?

No, just one MFX or the Chorus, plus Reverb. I was a little disappointed you can’t have a chorus + delay + reverb

Right, so like I said. 2 FX

I’m not too disappointed. I rarely use both delay and reverb at the same time. And when I do, I opt for something a bit more dense than zen core’s offerings, like Valhalla with some M4L LFOs.
But 3 FX slots woulda been killer.

Welp, that didn’t take long… so much for NGNY! Ordered a JX-08 from Sweetwater yesterday but my rep called and said they’re looking at mid to late February for estimated delivery at this point. Gonna be a long six weeks…

JD in the house! First impressions are it’s visually stunning, sounds great and all faders have a nice resistance to them. Gonna jam out tonight till the batteries go dead

Nice! Can’t wait to get it! The jx08 is awesome and this looks great too!

Just got my JD-08 - does sound really good. Never owned a JD-800, but in reply to an earlier comment, I’m finding the programming of new sounds really easy with the sliders, buttons etc. It’s really great at evolving, atmospheric pads a la BOC, but it has a really pleasing tone reminiscent of PPGs and 80s Fairlight sounds (think Art of Noise). Loving the size of it and being able to take away and play using the batteries. The lack of sysex etc is a shame, as I’d like to be able to share patches, but it’s not a deal breaker for me as I like making my own original sounds. Works great with the Arturia Keystep 37 for aftertouch and the chord feature.

I was reading the manual and the decision to use the ā€˜backup/restore’ method and no support for external banks/Zenology JD800 banks is a strange decision to make. It’s a deal breaker for me I think. Perhaps they will address it with import/export down the line :crossed_fingers:

Damn, that’s a shame. I imagine I’ll do most sound design on the unit itself, on the couch or other place away from my studio, but it would have been nice to have the Roland Cloud version to port patches across for use in DAW. Ah well, I’ll probably mostly use the presets anyway

Well I’m going to try and remain optimistic and think that they just haven’t developed that far yet, they have dropped big updates for the tr-6s and an editor, and after watching those interviews on how Zencore was about unifying hardware and software, it could be something they are working towards hopefully.

Bigger updates for the MC-101. Just bug fixes for the TR-6S.

Ah ok, that’s what it does. Thanks for posting that. All the demo videos have been awful so far.
Nice to see an example of someone using it as a synth, and not doing the banal comparison lets relive the old days nonsense.
Cheers.

I’m interested now. Haha.

Ahh yeah they came out after the FM update to the 8S. They got an editor though, so that’s the same ballpark really, the editor already exists in Zenology they just need to be interfaced.

Yes, the editor is nice, and it’s too bad there isn’t one for the MC-101 (besides Zenology, I guess, which isn’t free).

I dipped in to sample (in the old-fashioned sense) bits of the video a couple of posts up, but it seemed 90% reverb. I don’t know how you can conclude much from that.

The fact it can load Zenology banks is amazing though, it’s definitely the best of both worlds I’d like to see for the JD-08/Zenology JD Model.

Yes. The distinct lack of electric guitar ā€œrockā€ solo was definitely a selling point.
Can’t quite understand the appeal of that in 2022. It’s like if people were wetting their pants over a new synth having Camptown Races or I’m Your Venus demo songs included.

Was thinking the same thing - finally a vid without that god-forsaken electric guitar preset

@Flood If you are interested in the JX-08, ZZounds has them in stock. Just ordered mine and it’s been shipped.
