Roland JX-08 & JD-08

They could have just increased the polyphony by using upgraded processors.

I love my ZenCore machines, fwiw.

It is Zen Core.

I always wanted the Xm…but boy….that UI…

Not by that much including timbrality and by the same price.

Tom of Synth Anatomy seems to be reasonably thorough with his fact-checking. He does not have a history of making up fantasies and reporting them as facts.

I can buy his assertion that JX-8P had previously appeared as a ZenCore Model Expansion and this is now a hardware form of that. I think it can be loaded onto Jupiter X and some Fantoms. But not all ZenCore hardware can load ZenCore Model Expansions.

Itā€˜s their later ABM, analog behavior modeling which they used for jupiter x etc.
Was mentioned in the youtube comments of the product announcement video by Roland themselves.
Itā€˜s certainly different from the Aira and early boutique ACB stuff. Hence the increased polyphony everybody was crying after.
Some say ACB vs ABM is only marketing, but I believe there is a difference in the modeling accuracy.

I have MC-101 and 707. They are enough for me.

Jupiter Xm and X can load Model Expansions but I don’t want those badly enough to spend the extra money.

It is not ZenCore hardware, it’s rather that specific ZenCore Model Extension software that they dropped into the standard Boutique DSP hardware.

Since the originals were already digital … ACB doesn’t make sense I guess

I was just curious anyway.

ACB makes total sense. The Osc are DCOs. Digitally Controlled analog Oscillators. The filter was analog as well. It was Roland’s latest analog poly flagship.

I’m patiently waiting for JD-08s to be in stock. People getting their hands on the JX-08 isn’t helping!

It comes with that damn Roland Cloud subscription, doesn’t it?

The JX8P was analog

I am not sure.

It might be possible to buy a Lifetime Key for it without getting a subscription.

Or thanks to an idea from a certain someone, you could try a trial subscription, get JX-8P during the trial period, then cancel the subscription.

You know though if you don’t like the JX-08, you won’t like this either since it should be the same code, no?

At 3:33 below you can see it is possible to buy Lifetime Key for $149 (no subscription)

This guy is marketing his ā€œpersonal model expansionsā€, which include JX-8P.

Never heard of him until today. Never tried his stuff, nor do I plan to.

Good luck.

I havenĀ“t make up my opinion yet. There are aspects i didnĀ“t expect and donĀ“t like, but there are also things i do like. WeĀ“ll see. ItĀ“s a good synth. Definately more on the mellow site. A good soft emulation for free is this, iĀ“ve heard…: Martin Lüders' VST site

Things that i like from reading the manual and exploring in practice:
Hidden in the part settings is a filter type parameter with three different filter, plus there is a ā€œEXPā€ setting, when turned on, the amount of change made by the LFO Rate, Cutoff Freq, Res and Filter Env is increased beyond that of the original model (needed for e.g. filter going into self oscillation).
The 17 different FX types are a big plus and are expanding the sonic possibilities enormously, resulting in quite interesting sounds.

I thought some sounds sounded better in the last A/B/C comparison in the 08’s favor, one of the shimmery bright sounds.

The bass sound wasn’t even close to the original’s filter decay envelope, not sure why Espen didn’t try harder on that one to match the original. Can’t be that hard to slow down the decay and get much closer to the orignal patch. That said, I’d definitely welcome faster envelopes than on the original.

Personally, I’m still more interested in the JD-08. The JX just feels a bit more limited in my ears, it all sounds very JX, whereas the JD can sound both cheeky 90s and modern with some tweaking. I have yet to hear any modern patches on the JX yet, every video is all about matching the classic 80s sound so far.

Yes unfortunately. But i think the JX has a much broader range as well, and can do sound modern (=dirty and hard?), but canĀ“t deny for sure itĀ“s more mellow character. John Carpenter Soundmachine…i actually like that.

The big question for me is can the JD load Zenology JD model banks/presets?
