Roland JX-08 & JD-08

I wonder if programming the jd-08 will be a nightmare?

Hope so :kissing_smiling_eyes::ok_hand:

Anyone received theirs yet? Curious how the step sequencer works and whether p-locks work and if so, to what depth.

Like, is it possible to parameter lock any fader to effectively create a drum sequence out of a noise oscillator.

Still waiting for a proper review on the JX08 as a synth.
Not interested in presets, dont care if it sounds like the original.

Yes, you can parameter lock the faders. Just hold down a step and move the slider. It works like the MC-707, like automation lanes, so you have to lock the parameter on the step you want and then lock the step after it.

Edit: you can also record motion live

Thanks for the info! Is there a limit on the number of faders that can be p-locked on a sequence?

Up to four parameters

Edit: I think this is per sequence (part)

In his review he compares the 08 to his grandmother - and not the Moog!

That was funny. Respect to Espen Kraft for being so honest about how he feels even though he was sent the 08 by Roland.

I like his videos but as a rule he will always dog on anything inspired by a vintage synth, so his conclusion was totally predictable.

Yep, more presets, more comparison to the original.

That was funny. I don’t really care if it sounds like an original that I have no experience with, but I did think the original sounded better.

My first ever synth was a JX8P. I really loved the sound. I was tempted by the JX08 for nostalgia. But I had a JU06-A which I didn’t like. Sold it because of its sterile sound. So I think maybe he’s right. Maybe it sounds like a stuffed grandmother.

The taxidermy grandma story was great.

I’ve never used the original but I think the JX-08 sounds amazing in its own right. I’ll try and post a video this weekend of me noodling around and creating some patches.

With the larger sliders (for a boutique anyway) it’s really easy to program. I personally wouldn’t buy the JD-08 due to those tiny sliders. I’d probably end up using it as a preset box. The SH-01A, JU-06A and JX-08 are the best boutiques for this reason in my opinion! (followed by TB-03 and TR-06 for the larger and more spaced out knobs)

I don’t agree fully with his review. To my ears the 08 sounded fuller, the 8P kinda thin. Listen to the bass in the second part of the Demotrack. 8P thin flat bass, 08 nice punchy ballsy bass. But the lead pad in the first part, on the 8P organic transparent and singing, on the 08 dead digital squeaky (maybe intentionally?) Roland must have changed the envelope behavior, but also did some EQing to the final output stage. Two quite different sounding synths. I would like to see the strengths of the 08 worked out. Gotta have to test it myself…

I’ve never played the original jx8p. On its own terms, I think the jx08 sounds absolutely fantastic. Love it so much!

Ditto.
Seemed more baked in OG arrogance than anything else. Vintage owner bias.

How would you compare the sound of the JU-06A and the JX-08? Similar in a wider sense or totally different?

Another question, you say its easy to program. Is it easy to store patches? Edit existing ones?
Can you easily erase factory presets?

Im looking at getting one to replace my microkorg. Which on paper is awesome, and granted, you can get some killer sounds from it. But I do not enjoy programming it at all, I cant connect with it no matter how much I try.

The JX08 ticks a lot of boxes for me. Plenty of knobs/faders/buttons. Patch memories, polyphony, wide sound pallete.
