They should’ve called themselves Sound & Ripoffs instead!
Of course it sounds similar; they sampled Rhythm & Sound! I mean, that’s how it seems to me; I’m 99% sure of it. Even Moritz mentioned it in an interview that they turned down more than few clients for mastering (at Dubplates and mastering) because they recognized their sounds had been sampled!

I can’t provide any physical evidence atm but i know R&S catalog and sounds like back of my hand and some sounds seem quite similar if not identical to my ears! Friend of mine did the ‘csi enhance’ routine and according to his analysis some sounds look identical but they don’t null completely; but ofc if you make a fractional change in processing it can’t null. Sample something, change it a bit to hide your traces and you hope that youll pass just as a copycat. But in some instances that didn’t fool Moritz and Mark apparently! Iirc in that interview Moritz said that ppl would even sample their kick drums! Pathetic imo

Tell your friend to write down the track names for you. So we can all compare.

A large part of the sound is in the delay and reverb.

I’ve just messing around with my Prophet 10 and Volante and the results are very close to “Dem Never Know”.

The secret seems to be using poly mod from the filter env.

Filter and amp env settings:
attack: 0
decay: 5
sustain: 0
release: 6

Both oscillators set to saw tooth and tuned to C1, OSC B is slightly detuned.

Finally a slow bit of LFO going to the filter, source mix set slightly more to noise.

That’s probably one of the most common practices in electronic/dance music production. Or at least it used to be in the 90’s and 00’s. :slight_smile:

One thing is sampling to make something new out of it or as an obvious homage intention but completely anther thing is to sample to make the same thing! There’s a big difference!

very interested in the schulte clone you have ^.^ i love my tc xII bk phasers but i am curious how a schulte would sound in my setup. is it still produced?

Sadly not :confused: It’s called Infanem Compact Faye Sing B. I think it was a one-man operation that’s been silent for a few years. You can find their pedals on reverb now and then.

I don’t know of any other replicas in production, but I think the phasing circuit is supposed to be quite similar to the Mutron Bi-phase. It was re-released some years back and is still available:

The Schulte phaser was famously used on Kraftwerk’s Autobahn in 1974. Swoosh!

I have the little Doepfer one in Eurorack, it’s cheap and sounds as fat as all hell.

There’s also this clone, which gets produced in limited quantities every now and again.

oh wow, the doepfer looks promising. i have a 4ms pod with with io to use as kind of a eurorack pedalboard ^.^

This is DNII (as usual, straight from the stereo-out). There are at least four elements:

  • a chunky dub chord. I’ve used FM, creating lots of overtones … but strongly filtered with resonance for the “chunk”
  • a supersaw chord, first plucky, then ringing. Later, together with the bass, plucky again.
  • a noise floor with 50 Hz hum (FM Drum machine)
  • later: a clicky bass sound, also done with FM

The chord is acutally not a minor chord (although it feels minor), the whole chord is: c# f g# [a#] c.
There are always many factors playing in, for example how strong a finger hit a key, I hear the f louder than the others, so I programmed a stronger velocity for that note.
