Yes, very famous in the 00’s for electronic music, hype to see one

I have this unit. Never understood the hype.

Yeah, overall sound wasn’t that great.

A few popular FX boxes in the 90’s and 00s:

  • Ensoniq DP line
  • Roland Space Echo
  • Roland SDE330
  • Lexicon LXP15
  • Alesis Midi and Microverbs
  • Art, Zoom and Digitech rack units
  • Vesta Koza units
  • Boss SE70
  • Yamaha SPX90
  • Yamaha EMP700

The hype is for those who don’t have it

Well, I bought it and the FilterFactory when first released because I didn’t want to spend money on Moogerfoogers… I forgive my younger self.

Which modular synth modules would do the same job as these rack fx’s?

Why buy big ass rack stuff if u could have it in a much nicer smaller form factor?

Very true, there’s all sorts of stuff going on with the noise. Its actually quite doable on the OT with some nice noise samples, eqs, filters and phasers on a few neighbour tracks. I made all sorts of BC inspired stuff with just a MM and a bit of OT. Like this:

Well, I bought the rack gear over 25 years ago. My Rane MP2016 was also a rack mount. Nowadays, I have no desire for buying 19” rack gear. I like desktop boxes.

That’s nice. What’s the recipe?

Thank you.

Akai MPC Tubesynth chords processed thru various internal FX (reverbs, delays, etc., both on inserts and sends. The noise/crackle sound comes from Flavour FX on its own send), plus a final stereo out mix chain comprised of 3 heavy handed limiters/ maximisers, trying to recreate the “over the top” Pellarin sound (to my ears it sounds like extreme compression artefacts you can easily get from Ableton Live OTT).
Slight variation in tone comes from realtime filtering on a Mackie 1402 mixer.

in “Dem Never Know” the stab is just a classic reggae palm muted guitar.
in “Carrier” the stab sounds strummed kinda like a guitar. i swear i can hear a guitar pick hitting strings in the attack portion of the sound, my guess is they layered a synth and a reggae guitar skank in a sampler - adding the attack portion of a physical instrument to a synth is a nice way to add some physicality to the sound

They nailed THAT sound so perfectly… it’s almost a ripoff…

It still sounds too clean imo. I’ve tried it myself for years and it’s really hard to get that dusty vibe on purpose. I added noise, lower bitrate, saturation, more compression… etc.

The good thing is that when you try all these different tricks and methods you might find your own sound in the process of it all.

But i also produced a lot of bad rip offs.
