I use the Tascam DR-05 for this. It’s not too expensive and sound quality is good enough for sampling stuff
Zoom makes a couple of affordable ones as well.

Sony pcm-D50
The Zoom H1 is generally very good . I also use it to record live sets with a stereo line in from a mixing desk tape output
I also use the Sony PCM-D50 - great sound quality. Really sturdy unit.
I just found this, which looks very cool indeed:
It can record with stereo mic AND both 1/4" inputs onto 4 tracks. Great for capturing ambience of live gigs, or doing tutorial videos with real-time narration.
I recommend it over the Sony PCM-D50 cause you don’t necessarily need that resolution when recording OT output. Maybe for field recordings, yes, but the Sony is like, mucho $$$ vs the Tascam.
The Sound Devices kit is about as good as it gets. ENG/broadcast standard.

Anyone using this to sample?
My Booker recommended it (based on spec required) for a shoot I’m doing next week, but I figure I’ll make the most of a business expense and get something that I can also use to sample my synths and random sundries.
Anyone used this? Your opinion?
A bit late no doubt, but I just purchased one and it’s boss. On board mics are pretty decent if handled correctly (or rather if the device not handled at all) I have a pair of LOM Usi on the way and which I am very exited about.
I did get the TASCAM DR-100mkIII back then. Although I only used it once for work, they hired a new videographer instead.
I’ve only ever used It’s XLR in’s, and at top resolution recording from an SSLSiX it’s freaking amazing. I’m listening back on a dual dac A&K going through a Rupert Neve RNHP into DT1990’s !!!
