R.I.P. Dave Smith

how is this even possible , what happened!!!

This is the first time I have really been caught off guard by something like this. Thought it might be a bad joke when I saw the thread. Sad news.

The Prophet-5 was the first synth I ever dreamed of owning, though at the time it was A: backordered, and B: out of my reach ten times over. Still, it was the dream and a symbol of everything Sequential would come to represent for the next few years - classy and cool, with innovations musicians really needed at the time.

I did eventually get my Prophet-5 and it was everything I’d hoped. It remains my favorite analog polysynth. There are more capable and complex analog polysynths, and there are rarer and costlier ones, but none have ever matched the Prophet-5 for me. It is smart and sublime - like the man who gave it to the world.

Feck !

I’d estimate that the Prophet 5 was behind most of the many important and seminal synthesis sounds that formed the playlist of my formative listening years (covering a multitude of artists) … so i was destined to buy his first re-imagined Prophet … had a few personal emails from him generously answering sysex questions on the evolver and prophet

it’s hard to believe - especially as he seemed so relatively youthful in recent clips

very sad news and a genuine loss of a pivotal player in our respective sonic worlds

Same here man. I feel that. I can’t even imagine what the music I grew up with would have sounded like without the Sequential P5 and Pro - 1. They were utterly defining. There are like 5 - 6 synths that made up the bulk of early to mid 80s music. Namely the Pro - 1, Mini D, P5, OBX(A), Jupiter 8 and Arp 2600.

Damnit, this is sad. Watched an interview with him at Superbooth a couple of weeks ago and he seemed alright then, but I guess you just never know.

He’s a synth legend. His impact over the decades cannot be measured. Put him on the Synthesizer Mount Rushmore.

Thank You Dave!

Rest Easy.

I literally took the cover off my Pro 3 today and was writing a track with it when I read this. I just felt an urge to use my Pro 3 today.

Also, thanks for MIDI Dave! That one is a pretty big deal as well.

Damn what a bummer, F

A real downer. Seemed like he was still full of life, passion, and creativity.
