When you record into an audio track should you be able to see the waveform? The clip is playing the recording but there’s no devices loaded and no waveform view. Is this normal?

audio tracks record into clips rather than a device. you can see the waveform by pressing the clip button.

maybe something weird is going on because this just does not work for me. step by step:

  1. create an empty drum rack
  2. load a sample onto the first pad from a specific folder in my user library
  3. duplicate the first pad onto the second pad
  4. exit the browser and select the second pad
  5. select “Simpler” in the devices list
  6. press the swap button
  7. at this point i am in the list of Simpler presets
  8. toggle the “device/sample” option in the browser to “sample”
  9. now i am in the “Samples” directory, which is not the directory that i originally loaded the first pad from

i have tried as many ways of doing this as i can think of in the hopes that maybe it’s just some hyperspecific order of operations that allows you to return to the same folder, but if it is, i haven’t found the magic incantation yet. on the other hand, you are not the only person who has told me that this is supposed to work, so i feel like i must be doing something strange?

i have found a workaround:

  1. load a sample into the first pad as before
  2. without leaving the browser, duplicate the first pad onto some other pad
  3. load another sample onto the first pad
  4. without leaving the browser, duplicate the first pad onto another pad
  5. keep repeating and do not leave the browser or select another pad until all samples are loaded
  6. finally, load whatever sample you want to be on the first pad

…but this is as tedious and unforgiving as it sounds.

Agreed - ultimately that’s all that matters!

I find it a bit annoying that adding a M4L device to a collection doesn’t take you to the preset selection for that device like it does for Ableton devices. If you access it from Instruments it works fine.

Also, if accessing M4L devices from a collection when you hot swap it also doesn’t take you to the presets. Any workarounds?

This is my biggest complaint with simpler and the way ableton live handles samples. Move has direct sampling, but Push and live do not. You’ll get used to it if you stick with live/push, but it is indeed an odd workflow.

Sample to pad has been requested multiple times over in the beta suggestions forum. Hoping that at some point it will happen. Seeing as it can happen on Move hopefully it won’t be too much to port across

Looks like we can finally access Ableton Cloud direct from the Push 3. This will be fun.

Does anyone know how you re-enable automation for an encoder you’ve moved?

If you record some automation to an encoder, then physically move the knob yourself then you take over control of that parameter. But how do you re-enable the automation? I can see it’s still there as the dot is present but it is now greyed out.

In Ableton Live you press the re-enable automation button (back arrow at top of screen). Is there a button combo on Push that does this?

Edit: it’s Shift+Automate.

Does anyone know why I can’t get Loop activated in Simpler?
I have one audio file in there and I can’t work out why Loop won’t activate… :smirk:

I had a very similar issue last night, but with activating the LFO in Simpler. I could do it from Live but not from Push 3.

Seems like the bug that I have reported to Ableton.
The trigger for this problem is when changing from DEVICE to SAMPLE when loading a sample into simple.

This means you need to load Samples into Simpler keeping DEVICE selected. Which means that mappings and other settings are overwritten

Bugger. Ok, at least I’m not going mad…

Otherwise, these latest updates are great with Push 3… really digging the Macro functions we now have, and Cloud compatibility; it’s tied Push 3 and Move together.

I have to say that I may need to eat humble pie. I have been saying for quite some time that a 2nd hand Push 2 along with a Move, is the probably the best option for most of us Ableton ecosystem folk. But after a few days of Push 3C usage, I have to say that I think the Push 3 is quite a major step up from the Push 2.

The midi editing alone, using the jogwheel to select notes in the clip is a revelation.

One question though, is there a way to select multiple midi clips using that method via the clip or do I still need to select the notes in the step sequencer?

Do you mean selecting multiple MIDI notes (not MIDI clips)? If so, the answer is yes, and no…

If you want to select ALL the notes in a clip, in the Clip view press the Edit button (top right) then press the Select All button in the MIDI clip view.

If you only want to select some of the notes but not all of them, you cannot do multi-select directly within the clip view using the jog wheel IIRC, you need to press and hold a note in the step sequencer to select all instances of that note in the clip and then adjust note properties while still holding down the note in question. This is no good if you want to (in effect) lasso edit a subset of all of the notes in a clip and just edit that subset.

MIDI editing on Push 3 is pretty good for the basics (adjusting individual notes works really well) but has its limits.

Is Warp activated? You may need Warp on to enable loop.

Thanks for the reply but it’s ok, I have just worked it out.

It was the editing of the notes in the clip that I was talking about and I’ve just realised that the jog wheel is even more useful. I just scroll over the 1st note I want to edit, then click up on the jog wheel to select multiple notes. I can then edit the length etc of the notes in the usual clip editing way.

Yes you can click on multiple notes using the jog wheel. I actually find midi note editing on the screen really quick and easy.

I’ve been playing around with Deviate today. Really cool device!

It must be a bug in standalone (I’m also on the Push beta). When I switched to controller mode and did the same thing it worked fine (allowed me to loop as normal).
