Push 3 Users Thread

Ah thx. Was wondering if there are users with a good solution for this. A fully charged macbook with a push 3 on a usb-cable was kind of my ideal situation.

Push 3 (controller) with Simpler pretty much killed my GAS for a DT2. I think DT2 is a fantastic creative performance instrument (I’ve used the OG DT for years) but as a sampler it cannot compare with Push 3 and Simpler.

IME Push 3 does really need the PSU, it can work from USB-C power but odd stuff can happen that goes away when the power is switched on, and the display and pad LEDs are unusably dim IMO unless you’re in a pitch dark room. I always have the PSU connected.

Yeah, I will be mostly using it on a desk or on the couch, so keeping in powered isn’t really a problem. And if I really want to keep it unplugged, I can live with that quirk.

How do you sample into a simpler on the Push 3SA. I was looking at it earlier today and could figure it out

You can‘t. You record a clip in an audio track and then either convert to a new simpler, or you browse your current projects sample folder from the simpler where you want to load it.

I tried that but it just creates adds a simpler to a new track with no sample loaded

Edit: actually just tried again and it worked fine. The waveform looked flat so I thought it was empty

Converting shouldn‘t result in an empty new simpler. The new track should always contain your audio file. There is something wrong.

See my edit above, it worked fine but waveform was flat so thought it was empty.

It’s a weird workflow though right? Record into audio track then convert

you can have another point of view: your audio will be recorded into the projects folder structure under recordings. From there it’s centrally available. It’s you audio pool so to speak.

Thanks, that’s useful

Can you tell me why using simpler is better for you than the DT2? What can you do that is better?

pro: it’s polyphonic, it has the ableton warp modes (also polyphonic), it slices
con: it has only one LFO

to be continued, i guess

It’s possible to add lfo’s as devices right?

yes, but not per voice…

Ahh, right.

Dedicated pitch envelope too I guess, but DT can do that with an LFO

Can you convert a simpler to a drum sampler without having to reload the sample?

Lots of reasons.

Simpler has automatic zero-crossing detection, sample loop cross-fading, slice beats by transients (and adjust the position of each transient), sample zoom for fine editing, adjustable fades at the start and end of each sample to get rid of clicks, powerful sample warp functions (with different algorithms for different kind of sounds) and polyphonic playback of samples. All of this is directly controlled from Push with a very clear and logical UX.

DT2 has none of those functions today other than sample zoom after recording a sample (but, bizarrely, not for samples imported from the Drive+ or in the sample pool). It has sample looping but there are no cross fades which makes sample looping pretty much useless most of the time IME.

Some things might come eventually but most (probably) won’t as (to be fair to the DT2) it wasn’t really created to compete with a fully fledged sampler. I love the DT, don’t get me wrong, but its strengths lie in a different direction to something like Push + Simpler or a MPC.

That includes quickly recording something from the audio inputs on the DT2 then dropping sounds into a track, something the DT2 does incredibly quickly and simply but is more of a complex process on the Push with Simpler.

Conversely, I can take a single melodic sample, load it into Simpler on Push, tweak it, loop it with cross fades, and within a minute or so that single sample becomes a big fat polyphonic pad. That’s not possible on the DT.

Are you familiar with the default preset in Live?

You can save defaults on the PUSH.

For example, there are categories for whether the DRUMSAMPLER should be loaded instead of SIMPLER when you load a sample, etc.

But I’m pretty sure that you can’t convert to the DRUMSAMPLER yet.

Thanks, yes knew you could do it in Live but was trying to do it standalone. Thanks

It’s not a big deal, just as a new user I’m trying to understand its limitations
