Totally agree with you on the lack of modulation inputs on the voices - I love the thing but it’s so limited as a drum machine by this, in a way that feels like a major oversight. Not being able to modulate the envelopes really frustrates me, and I find it really weird that they put in the (basically useless) circuit bending patch points on the kick rather than a patch point for basically any other control on the channel. I’m approaching a point where as far as drums go it’s basically just being used to create sample material to go inside the Assimil8or (where the sounds can really be manipulated properly).
On the other hand, when you don’t try to use it as a drum machine and patch it up crazy, it’s pretty awesome, and missing these things doesn’t matter as much because it’s an unholy noise/drone box.
Everything modular has limitations. I think soma intended this to be used together with a modular system, and you can indeed send envelopes to triggers etc. You can even do it with an octatrack or DAW if you don’t have a eurorack system.
Definitely, I said the same in this thread a few days ago - PULSAR-23 by SOMA - #1116 by dokev I guess my issue is really that it’d be cooler if it was more modular - I’d like to combine the clock dividers and all the cool stuff you can do with them with attack/release modulation, for eg. Every bit of sequencing taken from outside of the Pulsar ecosystem loses you a little bit of that Soma organismic magic. Don’t get me wrong though - eurorack + pulsar is a hell of a combo, and the Pulsar is still awesome even with my bugbears.
To be honest I like these weird limitations. It would be definitely great if we could modulate the attack parameter but it also forces you to think about the alternatives as there are enough utilities. Just recorded a quick example where I tried to modulate the envelope of hht which is far from an ideal solution but it opened new doors for me. The audio is from the hht module.
Or I can even imitate the warp of hht by sending the noise signal to the reverb and using it as attenuated on ext in of hht.
From the manual:
You can connect the inputs and outputs of the Pulsar in any combination, without worrying that something will be damaged or done “incorrectly”. At the same time, due to the smart organization of the input and output impedance of the connection points, several signals connected together will be automatically mixed, and the points that can work as input and output (for example, triggering envelope generators) will figure out on their own what is connected to them and start to either receive the signal, or send it, or they will begin mutual modulation if a point with the same behavior is connected.
So it definitely invites you to patch it with “what if…” approach. That’s why even though it seems a bit limited, it is also very open.
Yeah the track trigger pins do function as a pseudo envelope with varying voltage.
That hh audio is swishy
This is my exact sentiment regarding pulsar right down to using a Assimil8or instead ![]()
Really great stuff
I got a Pulsar-23 recently and love it. I am still wrapping my head around it all, but it’s like a powerful modular system in one neat package. That kick is spectacular.
I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around this limited edition version of the Pulsar-23. With so many different ways a limited edition could be done, I wonder if a Russian military aesthetic was maybe not the best choice.
When the Lyra 8 was released in that colour, it was called the Pacifist Edition. Don’t know if it was meant as some ‘we are reclaiming the colour’ type thing?
That military bag that comes with this one really is in poor taste right now.
I want to write them about this weird choice. I mean the color seems pretty cool but that military bag!? Totally unnecessary.
Wow. That’s misguided at best. Is it real?
Since it’s already showing as in stock (meaning it’s been designed, produced, delivered to retailers, etc.), it’s probably safe to assume that this color was in the works for a while and is not a direct response to or endorsement of recent events.
It’s still bad timing, and hard to dissociate the look of it (and that bag) from the current military horrors, but bad timing is more forgivable than what’s implied by the alternative.

Posted this in the DR2 thread but probably belongs in the Pulsar zone. Sloppy dirge, getting good results running soma ether as a thru machine with gated triggers, if you can pick it out it’s the sort of cello sound.
Sector 9 (skate company) came out with the 'Bomb Hills Not Countries" thing on their decks during which ever time it was USA was bombing some other place.
Wouldn’t take much to do something similar with a drum synth.
It’s odd that Soma haven’t mentioned it at all. Also, there’s only like two stores listing it.
I’ll wait to see what Soma have to say about it before I get all hot under the collar…
not sure what all the fuss about is really. they’re clearly just catering for the market of end users who want to patch their noise and beat experiments in hedgerow and thickets with minimal external observation/intrusion.
