With almost any other piece of gear I end up taking an interest in, I find myself building a case in my head to justify buying it. But this thing being $99, I’m really trying to come up with a reason not to buy it, and I’m drawing a blank.
Well I’m sorry to inform you that I know the reason you cannot buy one.
You must buy 3-4, keep one (or two), and give the rest as birthday/holiday gifts to friends, family, children, random strangers, etc.
Edit - add some earbuds and a power bank (does it run on a power bank?) for the all on one gift.
For that price, why overthink it?
Just because I know deep down that the gear I already have could easily keep me busy for the rest of my life, so I’ve been working on restraint.
But yeah, this one really does seem like a no-brainer.
Nice little toy. I plan to make some wicked pad sound with this.
However its user interface is a bit crippled: important functions such as “filter envelope amount”, or “oscillator fine tuning” are not directly available via knobs.
For “filter envelope amount” that is hidden under a menu, and you have to adjust it pressing “+” and “-” buttons. They could have at least make use of the joystick to edit those menu values more conveniently.
For “oscillator fine tuning”, you have to choose (via menu, sigh) if the oscillator tune knob controls coarse or fine frequency.
In my very humble opinion, a combo such as FUNC + Knob (e.g. FUNC + FilterCutoff, and FUNC + OscTune) to access those additional controls would have been much better (come on Behringer, you can easily fix this in a firmware update!)
Also the receiving of patches via MIDI SysEx it could be better: instead of having to enter a menu to enable receiving the patch, it would be better to always receive a SysEx patch from any state, and have a menu to disable SysEx patch receiving for whatever reason (this to play nice with external editors, sequencers, etc while using the device)
Yeah… the menu diving is a bit much… but the joystick is the loose x/y kind, trying to hit values with that thing would be impossible!
Both the joystick and the +/- buttons should be used: the joystick for coarse and/or quick adjustments, and +/- for nailing to the exact value
That could work! Good idea!
But it’s soooo floppy. A bit of resistance would have been cool.
But cmon. This synth is a beast for the price, so a little flop…… eh.
A loose joystick can easily double as a rotary encoder, by moving it in circles. That, plus some acceleration tricks, could be used to dial values precisely.
I really like that…
Thats leads to the question… can you adjust the depth of the joystick? I havent looked into it… but that would be cool, so you could do live morphing to your taste, instead of worrying about how far to push the joystick…
Im not hating on it at all, its just new to me… Im used to mostly mod and pitch bend wheels, so Im beginning to see the why of some good flop… this is interesting…
especially if you can get the Pro VS to throw out midi messages via joystick… you could really get into some wild modulations… plus the form factor is perfect for a little joystick controller that also sounds like a beast of a synth…
The Eurorack version of this, the VICTOR, is finally in stock at Sweetwater. Hard to resist at $99.
I actually ended up not even touching the box yet…I still have doubts about whether I need a tiny synth (the sound is huge sure). I am super into semi-modulars now and I am after some large synths for my set up. If I absolutely need to have a tiny one, I am more inclined to get a Roland S-1 as it has 64 step sequencer. This dilemma has been keeping me awake for a few nights
I exchanged a few messages with people who own this and S-1, and got some comparison luckily… but my main issue is still whether I’d ever use a tiny synth and if it’s this one…
Consider the Behringer Victor Eurorack version of this synth.
The CV interface allows you to work this with a semi-modular. The Victor is in stock.
Hard to beat the price on this.
I remember watching the Behringer “vector synthesis explained” video and was very impressed. I have a Softpop 2. It’s my first ever semi-modular and I have zero background in semi-modulars. So if this can pair with it and expand my opportunities, I think I will go for it!
After my prior message in this forum I did end up picking up a Victor at Sweetwater. It’s lovely sounding and I warrant may have one of the highest grin/dollar ratios of any oscillator in eurorack. It’s not perfect (more modulation please) but really is outstanding value.
I think for DJCHEMIE, the fact that can also use the Joystick for a two parameter CV control, with other modular gear when not using the Victor synth could increase the value on this, in a Eurorack setting – for extra UI CV control.
I kept going back and forth between some options and ended up ordering Behringer Kobol Expander. Can’t wait to explore it once it’s here!
I decided to keep mine (Pro VS Mini) even though I have no interest in tiny synths (other than semi-modula). I set it up today to see how it sounds. To be honest I didn’t like it at all. Sounded very much toy-like I think… or I don’t know what to say. Sounds very weak. I am actually surprised because I saw some videos with great demos but I guess sometimes pedals do the hard work…
